Project Summary
Given society´s drive and concern for achieving gender equality, Canfranc Foundation has focused on developing Science, Technology, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) activities aimed at awakening and developing interest in science and technology among young people, especially women: Canfranc believes true equality will not be achieved until women have the same training opportunities as men in all areas of knowledge and skills.
In an initial step, we contacted Wonder Foundation (UK) and Dziesiatka (Poland), both partner in previous projects, and raised the possibility of commencing this project that would firstly awaken and then go on to develop interest in science and technology in a fun and interactive way for young people, focusing on young women. The projects objective was to increase young women’s potential and empowerment in order to drive gender equality. Thus we wanted to awaken interest in learning about STEAM and apply this to real-world situations. Within this partnership, YP could also share concerns with those in other EU countries.
Within all the activities of the 3 organizations contributing to this project, we promote gender equality. We are convinced that society is becoming more and more aware of the role women have had in science throughout the last centuries. We believe this is an added value to the project: achieving gender equality through empowering women in technological projects.
The TWIC 5.0 project has helped YP to be more creative and has addressed the development of high quality skills and competences:
– Teamwork and collaboration with other peers
– Communication and other social-emotional skills
– Participants confidence and self-esteem
– Logical-mathematical competence and reasoning achieving a greater capacity for problem solving.
– Creativity and imagination
In addition, the project has fostered an entrepreneurial spirit in participants with the help of technology.
Objectives:
– To help make digital skills part of the daily lives of 240 young people in Spain, the UK and Poland.
– At least 144 young people in Spain, 40 in the UK and 56 in Poland have participated in STEAM training activities and indirectly benefited some 2000 YP in Aragon and La Rioja, and some 500 in the UK and Poland.
– That young people have been encouraged to undertake small social projects in line with their age and vocational training and have succeeded in doing so.
The activities carried out and in which these young people have participated have been grouped into 4 thematic blocks:
– Arts & Craft: in order to promote creativity, participants performed a theatrical performance with corporal and musical expression
– Creative architecture: to develop spatial-temporal vision participants worked on graphic design (inskape) and 3D printing (tinkerCAD)
– Creative technology: inventor app for creating mobile applications
– Organic garden: through the Arduino program
Project Methodology:
Virtual training, animations, training materials regarding the identification and evaluation of results obtained.
In addition, one YP and one YW from each country have been able to participate in the two transnational meetings, in the UK (where Ada Lovelace, a mathematician and writer, was born and is considered the first programmer in history) and in Poland (birthplace of Madame Curie). There they shared their concerns and dreams with young people from other EU countries and then went to share their experiences with others in their own countries with many other young people.
Global result of TWIC 5.0:
The acquisition of digital skills and improvement in digital literacy combined with a corresponding development of an entrepreneurial mindset.
More concrete results:
– The development of STEAM activities in which young people have been involved since their design and organisation (search for monitors and teachers, materials to carry them out, management of economic resources, etc)
– Through them, they have acquired and consolidated the digital skills that enable access to the labour market.
– We have strengthened the combined work of three European NGOs working for gender equality and women’s empowerment.
This project has had an impact:
– To awaken interest in STEAM technology within a large number of Spanish, English and Polish young people, and who will be working professionals in the very near future.
– Development of coaching (direction and guidance) with young people who have wished to start programmes related to social entrepreneurship.
– Consolidation of networking between three EU partners.
We have made outlines, guides and videos available to other organizations, as they are an open resource on the web; so these can be implemented and if they wish, other organizations can count on our advice and experience.
TWIC 5.0 is a very current topic, in continuous advancement. Its results are easily replicated and maintained and will continue to be used after the project is finished.
