Project Summary
Inadequate health literacy is a global problem, resulting in a number of negative effects in all sectors of the local, regional, national and wider community: lack of medical information, the use of more expensive health services, a greater number of chronic illnesses, additional burden on the health system, higher rates illness and reduced work productivity.
The nurses / medical technicians and the physiotherapist / physiotherapist at the end of secondary education have the professional competence to carry out health education and enlightenment. The system does not use the vocational capacity of this profession for the purpose of health education at the preventive level, primarily due to the chronic lack of this interest in hospitals and secondary healthcare institutions.
The aim of the project is through project activities, to test and develop a new curriculum that would be applied at the intenational level. In curriculum development, pupils, including transnational learning, knowledge of other countries’ legal regulations, the influence of society on health and the types of health care institutions in other countries, would be actively involved. For the testing and experimental implementation of the new subject curriculum, 20 students of the third grade of the Medical School Pula directed the Medical nurse / general medical technician and physiotherapist / technician, and 20 students of the secondary school health school Slovenj Gradec are directing the medical profession / health care technique. Pupils would be selected according to clearly defined, uniform and transparent criteria.
Through the experimental implementation of the subject ‘Health Literacy’ curricula, students’ professional competences, especially those related to the implementation of health education, would have developed.
The workshops and theoretical lessons, elaborated with the operational plan and program, which would last 74h, are designed to maximize the student’s vocational potential while developing new skills. Practical classes are foreseen for 70 hours, enabling students to carry out health literacy of target groups (kindergarten groups of 4-6 year olds, pupils attending grades 5 and 6 of elementary schools and students attending 1st grade secondary school). The expected goal of obtaining health literacy from target groups from the earliest age and expected outcomes is understanding of medical information, knowledge of health institutions, active participation in the use of health services, knowledge of rights and obligations, and health protection measures.
In the realization of project activities, besides the students, the teachers from the Medical School Pula and the teachers of the Medical School Slovenj Gradec are also actively involved, with experience in Erasmus + projects and many years of experience in the educational work. By developing work on the new curriculum, they would acquire new professional knowledge necessary for a better implementation of the teaching process but would also develop new methodologies that would be applicable in further work.
The Partner of the Public Health Institute of the Istrian County has many years of experience in health education, and their partnership will have an invaluable value in the exchange of experience, education of students as well as in the dissemination of project activities. The experience in statistical-analytical processing would contribute to the quality of the project activities.
In all phases of project activities, the partners would be involved in the dissemination of project activities, which would result in the creation of new stakeholders and the sustainability of the project and after the end of the project activities envisaged by this project. Particularly important is the participation in various professional congresses in which to present the project, information and involvement of media and local and regional government units. the creation of a multimedia portal ‘Health literacy’ would inform the wider community about the benefits of acquiring knowledge in the field of health literacy, project and project activities. A communicator in which healthcare users could ask questions that would help students with mentorships respond to the questions posed would have positive effects for all parties involved in portal services: the user gets useful information, does not burden doctors and the health system, reduces the list Waiting, students improve professional competencies, increases motivation with new learning methods and improves the relationship between the teacher and the student
