Project Summary

The construction sector contributes with a 35-40% of total de CO2 emissions, so that, to be able to manage these, crucially important calculate them and evaluate the environmental impact in respect of greenhouse gas emissions in a complete manner, from cradle to grave, namely, from urban planning until construction or building rehabilitation.
Nowadays, Building Information Modelling (BIM) is implemented in limited countries as software for architects and engineers, however it is tending to become in few years the main tool for Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector all over the world.
For its part, currently Geographical Information Systems (GIS) is based on three fundamental pillars: municipal digital mapping, regulation and the administrative task of the own Council.
On the other hand, the most studies about estimation of footprint are focused in energy efficiency over the useful life, but not about the CO2eq emissions during the manufacture, transport and installation of the different materials, as well as how easily is to deconstruct, recycle or reuse of construction materials. In conclusion, what we attempt to do is unify BIM and calculation of CO2eq emissions and recyclability of buildings taking into account the circular economy process for the development of urban planning and rehabilitation with the aim to produce a useful learning tool, where students and professionals of AEC sector will be able to make aware about it as far as possible and implement in their daily work.
For that reason, the UrbanBIM project develops at an educational level the interoperability among metadata generated by the emerging technologies of BIM and GIS, due to all information can be flow into these systems and reinterpreted to exhaustive knowledge of urban developments and rehabilitations from an environmental point of view, as the principal measure of integration in the “triple helix” of knowledge.

UrbanBIM project is also closely linked to restoration of cultural Heritage of historical city centres, because of there is an obvious need for energy renewal of such buildings and it will affect to consumption of materials and their recyclability. Many of the cultural heritage buildings belong to municipalities. For this reason, it is necessary to provide them with the necessary tools so that they are able to carry out the urban heritage rehabilitation according to the environmental needs in force.
Therefore, UrbanBIM increases awareness of benefits of rational use of energy and materials resource for students, professionals of AEC and public bodies using innovative technologies as BIM and GIS.

OBJECTIVES
In particular, and to contribute to the solution of the above described, the objectives of this project are the following:
– Integrate BIM tools across all strands of the triple helix in the construction sector: Public bodies – companies – universities.
– Implement on municipal public bodies the calculation of CO2 emissions at all stages involved in construction at urban level, both developments and rehabilitations.
– Increase on awareness of climate change problem in the most influence strata within construction sector.
– Provide information about the emissions of each product/building/urban plan.
– Improve interoperability between emerging technologies (BIM/GIS) and those already implemented in public bodies.
-To create a computer tool that is open to researchers, architects, engineers and civil servants in the construction sector, who can improve and refine the project beyond the end of the project to facilitate its adaptability of new metadata capable of being generated by BIM/GIS in the future.
– Contribute to the implementation of digital cities making everything related to urban planning and urban management in a database that multiply their benefits, with the applicability that this will entail in the development of other research areas such as Big-Data and IoT.
– Gradual implementation in municipalities and then grow nationally and internationally, contributing to a new and more advanced document management model of our cities at urban level.
