Project Summary

The YEL project – YOUNG EUROPEAN LEADERS – aimed at debating and leadership skills development put together six secondary schools from Finland, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Spain and Slovakia to cooperate in a school partnership which made the preparation and participation in the model UN conferences possible for the students and teachers not only from the partner schools.
Throughout the wide range of project activities, students were given the opportunity to improve their communication skills (argumentation, negotiation, public speaking), critical thinking, negotiation, research, language and digital competences, etc. and collaborate together in the virtual space (in the TwinSpace on e-twinning site) and face-to-face in the multinational debating/youth clubs created at schools or during model conferences with international and multilingual setting (www.zamun.sk). In order to participate and perform well at a conference (where students solve specific international issues as delegates of assigned countries), involved teachers together with the students created intellectual outputs, which have been implemented into the club actvities or ordinary lessons in each school and tested as a part of school curriculum, in particular during 2-month long-term study mobilities of selected students (30 in a two-year project period). The methodology applied envisages long lasting impact of the project results on wide school community. The partcipating schools organized school debates, local public discussions, simulations of UN or EU conferences and projects in cooperation with local and regional activities and will share their experience with others also after the official end of the project. All the materials developed in the project are published through e-twinnig site, school webpages and ZAMUN website, the project website www.yel-erasmus.eu and they are made available as a source for others who want to conduct a similar project.
