Project Summary

“Reset Today or Game Over Tomorrow” is a project about the environment. The title of the project is meant to appeal to young people who often enjoy computer games, to encourage them to have a similar fun approach, in the sense that they overcome hurdles and keep working towards a common goal, so that they can become „winners” in the future.
The aim is to educate children about the day to day causes of pollution and empower them to find solutions within their own home, school and local community. Young people today are aware of many catch phrases such as global warming, air pollution or carbon footprint etc. These are hurled around by the media and at protest demonstrations like Fridays for Future. Yet many pupils do not really understand the meanings or the connection between global warming and climate change, nor do they see how they can help to reduce pollution. The purpose of this project is to educate pupils about the facts based on established expert knowledge, so they understand the mechanisms involved in global warming.
During the first year of the project, pupils will collect information. Experts from NGOs such as Global 2000 and organisations such as incineration and recycling plants will be invited. Exhibitions on climate change will be visited and research undertaken by the pupils on tangible and visible climate change in the partner countries. These results will be displayed and compared at our first LTTA meeting. We will use e-twinnig and a common project homepage to publish our findings.
Thus, equipped with a basic understanding of the sources of environmental pollution, we aim to encourage students to identify problematic areas within their school, home and local environment. The data collected will document pupil’s consumer habits and their readiness to recycle waste. They will interview friends, family and relatives as well as local people on their consumer and recycling behaviour. Afterwards the results will be compared with the partner schools and displayed and exhibited and published on the homepage and on e-Twinning.
After analysing the results, pupils will work on improving the situation. They will work on „waste guidelines” in their own schools and their homes. By empowering them to work on solutions and introduce their own guidelines, pupils are able to act as multipliers at home and within their communities. This approach requires a cross-curricular methodology involving most subjects and a variety of media. The idea is to involve the whole school by working on different relevant topics at all school levels. Outside of school, efforts will be made to “green up“ the surroundings and encourage bees.
In the second year we will deepen and broaden our knowledge by learning practical things like how to upcycle clothes, metal, wood and other waste. These workshops will make the pupils appreciate the raw materials and find pleasure in redesigning and changing the materials into something new with their creativity. Insect hotels are just one example of possible creations. The third LTTA will also be under this motto where we exchange our experiences concerning recycling but also take part in several upcycling activities. Art, Crafts, textile crafts and IT are some of the subjects where these activities will take place throughout the second part of the project year.
Since our eating habits have a direct impact on climate change we plan to work out environmentally friendly recipes which we will elaborate on and exchange with our partners. We plan to create tasty and healthy recipes with a small carbon footprint which children also like to eat. The collection of the recipes will be put online and there will be a vote on which recipe is the best. For schools which don’t offer cookery as a school subject work on the recipes can be part of their language lessons or Biology lessons with the focus on nutrition, which takes into consideration the partners’ location, climate and local produce.
In order to sum up our project work we want to let the partners choose between either making a video about the project, an environment play, a rap or a song. Each partner can choose their medium of presentation with the pupils. These results will then be presented on the last LTTA and will be put online on the homepage and on e-Twinning.
Finally, we believe that the work on this project will have a long-term effect on the attitudes and behaviour of our pupils regarding climate change. We hope to inspire them to change their, their families and their local community’s habits towards a sustainable environmentally- friendly future. Not only will pupils improve their language skills, but they will also experience working together with their European partners is of benefit to all of us. These positive experiences can help towards an open mind set and strengthen democratic European values amongst our pupils.
