Project Summary
The project deals with the theme of water in the context of environmental issues. The participants of the project are the 13-15 year-old grammar school students from Reunion and Slovakia.
Every child has at least once in their life plunged their head into the water regardless of where it came from. He does not realize how lucky he is to be able to enjoy this water, as much for fun as for washing, drinking, and relaxing. The little things in life that we take for granted are often the source of big problems elsewhere in the world. With the growing world population and the environmental challenges we face, it is of the highest importance that the new generations are involved in concrete proactive actions.
Our global water resources have changed a lot in the past few decades and, unfortunately, not for the better! This project aims to educate our young people about global warming, the pollution of our oceans, rivers, lakes and the solutions that exist to preserve our source of life.
This water project will help answer these different questions: What are the different uses we make of water, in school and at home? What do we know about our water consumption in the school? At home ? What are the most demanding jobs? Where does the water flowing from the tap come from? What is “potable” water?
Faced with climate change, solutions must be found to maintain water supplies, while also taking into account the risks of pollution caused by human activities. The preservation of aquatic ecosystems and water resources is the priority for all countries in the world.
This project is carried out in interdisciplinary: the disciplines concerned are: Life and Earth Sciences, Physics, Chemistry, Technology, Geography, French, English, Mathematics, EPS, Creole, Plastic Arts, Music.
The objectives are as follows:
-Make students aware of the environment and sustainable development
– Improve fluency in French language
– Allow the student to discover the economic and professional world
– Reinvesting the techniques used in physical sciences (decantation, filtration, flocculation, etc.)
– Practice a scientific approach
– Use mathematical skills (geometry, volumes, scales, etc.)
– Design and produce a technical object
– Know the biodiversity of the coast
– Develop mastery of the usual information and communication Technologies
– Improve the responsible behavior of students (collective life, mutual respect, etc.)
– Promote independence and taking initiatives
The activities to be carried out: Excursions will be organized: studies of ecosystems, the natural area, the aquatic environment, visit to a natural park, a dam, a hydro power plant, a large paper mill, an exhibition on the occasion of International Water Day. We will develop the results of the descriptions of two landscapes and we will draw conclusions by comparing them, we will rely on continental and island waters. We will do the basic chemical analyzes of the water and draw conclusions about its quality. We will learn two songs on the water – in Slovak and French languages. We count on a trip accompanied by the cleaning of a watercourse.
The two exchanges will serve us to finalize the results: mind maps, posters, poems, glossary, brochure. Throughout the project, active work via the eTwinning platform will continue.
At the end of the project, we will fill out the same questionnaire on water as at the beginning and draw conclusions which could show us the impact of the project on the participants, their parents and other people involved.
The concrete results of the project will be:
– production of the glossary (French, English, Slovak, Creole) on water and the environment
– comparison of the state of the waters of Réunion – Slovakia (common, different points) – from the point of view of geography, biology …
– mental maps describing the consequences of climate change on the quality and quantity of water
– the results of chemical analyzes carried out in the school environment (laboratory)
– posters, poems, brochure (drawings, collages, …) on the subject What can I do myself for …
– project website
We are counting on the long-term benefits of this project, which will be reflected in the implementation of the rules for the use of water. Participants, their families and students from two establishments will familiarize themselves with everyday situations so as not to waste water and protect it.
