Project Summary

The Digital Literacy for NGO 2.0 (DLNGO 2.0) project aims to improve the digital literacy skills of the social sector (or third sector) staff and volunteers, as well as the marginalised communities they serve, at a European wide level through the exchange of best practices between 11 leading social sector capacity building orgs. The general objective of the project is the exchange of best practices, integrating the experience of partners engaged in different topics related to digital literacy and digital transformation of the social sector – focusing on methodologies, conditions, content, new approaches etc. Three transnational meetings will be organized (Kiev, Warsaw, and Budapest) to gather 22 participants from 11 different countries to discuss various topics and explore and further develop the digital transformation framework for the social sector. The project will contribute to the efforts of providing individuals (educators, youth workers, educational leaders, and support staff) with life-long professional learning opportunities around digital literacy. This project is an expansion of the DLNGO Erasmus+ KA2 project. Known as the ‘social economy’ or “NGO”, this large group includes cooperatives, mutual societies, non-profit associations, foundations and social enterprises. They operate a very broad number of activities, provide a wide range of products and services across the European single market and generate millions of jobs. These social economy enterprises or “NGOs”, contribute to the EU’s employment, social cohesion, regional and rural development, environmental protection, consumer protection, agricultural, third countries development, and social security policies. However this group and its workers are often the ones that have little resources to invest in digital skills or new technologies. That is why we will work together to explore ways of creating more resources, support services, education, to close the digital gap between the social non-profit sector and the commerical for-profit sector.

We chose the project partners on the basis of their engagement and expertise in digital literacy, digital transformation, ability to reach disadvantaged communities, and of course, their keen interest in the project. They also have strong working relationships with one another as members of the TechSoup Europe network (www.techsoupeurope.org). All members share a common vision and mission — to strengthen the local communities and non-profits they reach with technology, know-how, and access to peers, experts, volunteers, grants, and other resources. This network also is made up of foundational, visionary leaders in the European non-profit sector who share a mission to wisely steward shared resources and make it easier for civil sector stakeholders to connect and have collective impact, growing in the process. The 11 partners who will partake in this project are: Les Ateliers du Bocage (France), the Fundraising Verband Austria (Austria), Fundacja TechSoup (Poland), Asociacion TS Spain (Spain), Mozaik Foundation (Bosnia and Herzegovina), SocialTechno (Italy), GURT (Ukraine), NIOK (Hungary), WCIF (Bulgaria), MISSS (Slovenia), and Haus des Stiftens (Germany).

The main result that we expect from the project is that it will contribute to the development and enhancement of the digital literacy and digital transformation programmes of each of the project partners in their respective regions, which serves a vast network of NGOs (400 000+) across Europe. We expect to learn from each others’ experiences, successes, challenges, identify synergies, come up with effective ways to continue working together through the exchange of ideas, practices, experiences, and methodologies among partners. We hope to see the following long-term benefits: Improving the digital skills of adult learners in the social sector to narrow the digital literacy gap, increasing the adoption of new technologies by the third sector, and stimulating NGOs towards digital transformation.
