Project Summary
Today, interest in children’s games has declined. As urbanization increased, playgrounds decreased, workplaces were built instead of playgrounds. As the spaces reserved for children are very limited and neglected, children who could not find a place to play started to play in their homes. However, advances in science and technology have also affected children’s games. The voices of children playing with excitement in front of the neighborhood have been inaudible, our children’s games and toys have changed, and they have become addicted to the virtual games and they have started playing alone. Instead of cultural activities that would contribute to socializing their time outside school, the children have been dependent on a virtual world where there is no emotional sharing and mutual communication, and they can not share the joy of victory and the sadness of defeat. Computer games have been replaced by children’s games played on the streets. These games, which have no warmth, make children aggressive, incompetent, physically lonely and free from socializing. As can be understood from the information given above, street games can be seen as activities by which children develop both themselves and other friends physically, socially and emotionally by learning and being affected by each other. Seeing the shortcomings of the digital world and computer games in this regard, our project team has initiated a work under the name of “street games at school” again in line with the mission to raise healthy generations. At this point, the incredible contribution of street games to children’s development and the fact that today’s children are almost unable to benefit from these contributions have been a great source of motivation for our project, which aims to bring life to street games again. It will be very beneficial to approve our street games project, which entertains children, educates them while entertaining, and teaches many social values and behavior patterns through play. Therefore it is clear that supporting our project by providing funds will be very useful for society.
The objectives we want to achieve:
• We aim for the children to gain personal and social habits such as self-confidence, self-control, quick decision making, collaboration,
accuracy and discipline.
• The children will learn the necessary rules of that role by assuming the roles of various occupational groups in the game.
• Children will develop their feelings of communicating, observing, collaborating and helping each other while playing games.
• Children will learn non-verbal social rules such as thanks to play, good morning, good night, or waiting for their turn, listening to someone who speaks, following traffic rules, talking on the phone.
• The children will learn moral concepts such as right-wrong, good-bad, beautiful-ugly, right-wrong and unfair through play. It can also learn social rules, such as respecting others, protecting others and their own rights, undertaking the tasks assigned, trusting themselves and others, deciding, implementing and collaborating on any matter
• Children will also learn to belong to a group, to be a part of that group, to do business with responsibility within the group, to cooperate with group members through games
.The games will contribute to children’s mental development
.The street games will contribute to children’s language development
The project lasts 2 years. There will be 5 country visits which will last a week at particular intervals during the duration of the project. In each country visit, there will be a project theme which will guide the activities in the country visited. Based on the theme the activities will be run related to street games. The themes will include, street games and values, street games and physical development, street games and emotional, psychological development, street games and personality development, social skills, street games and love of nature, environment. Games of different cultures will be played together and the themes in the games will be examined. The activities will cover role plays, pair work, group work, ask and answer, learning by doing, watching, listening. By the project contribution the participants will improve their social skills, learn social values, improve physical, physiological, emotional development, and respect and love the nature and environment. In the long run, the project schools will fully integrate the street games in their curriculum. They will have been using street games as a part of education regarding their contribution to social values, physical and mental development in students, and environmental consciousness. The students of the participating schools will both learn and entertain in the school environment. The moral, physical, emotional, social and academic education will be provided at once at school
In conclusion the project is designed to revive the street games with their contribution to children once again in today’s world
