Project Summary
Drugs use and alcohol consumption are major threats to young people’s health and well-being worldwide. They contribute to all the leading causes of death for young people (suicide, road crashes, accidental poisoning, and assault). Directly addressing people aged 16‑25 years, DARE aims to tackle the sensitive issue of youth drugs and alcohol consumption. The project aim strategically aligns with the objectives of the DARE partners’ youth work (e.g. promote youth safety and well-being). To achieve the aim, the project will expand the partners’ capacity in the domain of road safety, incl. driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, into the broader topic of drugs- and alcohol-associated problems. To start the conversation around drugs- and alcohol-associated problems with the young people, DARE will unfold the potential of the project partners’ experience in deploying information technologies through peer-to-peer communication strategies by integrating cycling virtual reality (VR) (Objective 1). Through that conversation, DARE shall achieve a measurable change in young people’s alcohol- and drug-related behaviour (Objective 2). To achieve a measurable change, DARE will implement community-based multi-component initiatives. Those initiatives will leverage stakeholders’ experience and expertise through local working groups (LWGs) (Objective 3). The LWGs will gather representatives of state or regional government institutions, academia, business, other NGOs, youth workers and young people. To fulfil those three objectives, AGILE management will ensure timely quality deliverables in Argentina, Belgium, Bulgaria, Chile, Ecuador, the Netherlands and Romania. To produce the deliverables, DARE will apply an AGILE implementation methodology. The methodology will guide the implementation of 2 partners’ meetings, 8 youth workers’ mobilities, 7 young volunteers’ trainings, 14 implementations of a joint international campaign, 14 local working groups’ meetings, and 7 national conferences. Through these activities, DARE will involve 4,000 unique direct participants. To reach beyond the direct participants, DARE will aim for thematic dissemination through conferences and journals on the topic of alcohol and drugs. Those outlets will be targeted through scientific publications, based on DARE-collected evidence on adolescents’ alcohol and drugs consumption cognitive determinants. Additionally, DARE will use conventional (min 7,000,000 people reached) and social media campaigns (min 140,000 people reached). Thus, the overall DARE outcome will be a contribution towards the implementations of the Strategy to support EU countries in reducing alcohol-related harm, the EU Drugs Strategy and the EU Youth Strategy.
