Project Summary

Research shows that a multidisciplinary approach, with the involvement of parents, children, teachers, and professionals from the local community is key to resolving early school leaving and behavioral issues of school children. Whether learners are successful in school or at risk of early leaving is largely dependent on their socio-economic status that are present in all of Europe’s education and training systems. Children from lower socio-economic backgrounds are less likely to participate in and benefit from education and care than children from more advantaged backgrounds. The initial disadvantage can be exacerbated throughout the school years if additional support is not provided to help children close educational gaps. Equal participation in quality ECEC is however found to be among the most effective approaches to combatting socio-economic inequalities in educational achievement.

The specific objectives are:
1. To identify, test and mainstream best practices and innovative methods of participation particularly in the context of diversity (socioeconomic and cultural diversity, minorities, etc);
2. To improve the teacher’s competencies pertaining strategies and approaches the involvement of parent by learning from the experiences of colleagues from other countries in Europe;
3. To improve the integration and interaction of the different components of the system (children, practitioner, researchers, families, community).

Target group includes: parents from disadvantaged groups, teachers, school professionals etc. Children from social and migrant minorities in this case will be the second target group.
Number of participants in IO1 – 30 per country, 210 total;
Number of participants in IO2, IO3, IO4 – 20 per country, 140 total (each IO);

Activities:
Intellectual Output 1 – Analysis the best practices to examine different approaches to involve parents and build a relationship;
Intellectual Output 2 – School guides: a program for schools to involve parents from disadvantaged groups – a concept guide to develop training for parent guides, to help parents to reflect on their experiences and to gain further knowledge about the education of their children;
Intellectual Output 3 – Empowering parents – a guide to foster a parent-student relationship at home, ways teachers can ensure parents understand how to support their children’s homework in a context of bilingualism or poor spoken/ written on the parents’ part;
Intellectual Output 4 – Student Portfolio, a ‘bridge’ between school and family – a practical portfolio for students which can be used at home as well.

Methodology:
Through the united approach, partnership will divide responsibilities under the coordination of Folkuniversitetet. Folkuniversitetet as project leader will monitor the performance and consistency of activities with project objectives and context along with the quality of project products and management.

The expected results:
1. IO1 – 70 good practices selected (10 per country), 20 interviews per country with key stakeholders;
2. IO2 – 70 parents, 70 teachers (10 per country) trained in raising awareness on how to support children from disadvantaged groups. The Guide will be circulated to at least 100 parents and 30 schools (each partner country) for reference, study and practical use.
3. IO3 – The Guide will be circulated to at least 100 parents and 30 schools (each partner country) for reference, study and practical use;
4. IO4 – The Student Portfolio will be circulated to at least 100 parents and 30 schools (each partner country) for reference, study and practical use;
5. Increased awareness by school professionals, parents on how to support and learn children with disadvantaged background;

The expected impact of the SEE-ME project will be:
1. Participants level in project activities: increase awareness, knowledge, experience and skills on how to support and educate children with disadvantaged background
2. Participating organizations level in project activities: the participating organizations will receive new experience, knowledge, and skills, widen the network, get more tools for further activities. They will get the formation of effective networks and sustainable relations between partners who work with people from disadvantaged background.
