Project Summary
The project “CLOCK-Sustainable Cities Lifestyle ResOurces CooKing” is an Erasmus+ project of four schools from Germany, Italy, Poland and Spain. The German school will coordinate the project. The duration of the project is two years and it is set up for students aged 15 to 19.
The main objective of the project is to give students ideas as to how to lead sustainable lifestyles so that they actively “Stop the Clock” and make a difference in times where climate change is imminent and tremendous. They are made key figures in their school communities to spread these lifestyles and to raise awareness of the importance of civic engagement to counteract climate change as individuals and as teens.
There are 102 participants travelling to learning, teaching and training activities (72 students, 30 teachers). At transnational meetings staff from the arts, geography and science departments of the hosting institution will be involved to conduct parts of the activity. Also, local institutions such as museums and a university will be involved in each activity.
The design of the project meetings offers students various approaches to the topic of sustainability ranging from more artistic to more technological approaches. Thus, students have a chance to learn about a topic they are interested in and enthusiastic about. This means that the meeting they attend and the topic they work on presents a worthwhile experience for each individual student so that every student is adequately challenged but at the same time not unable to cope.
At a joint staff training event best-practice dealing with how the schools teach sustainabilty and how they tackle climate change in class and at school will be exchanged. At the last meeting the teachers will review their teaching with regard to sustainabilty and how their teaching has changed in the course of the project. Teaching resources will be published in a teachers’ corner on eTwinning and on the project’s website.
All students’ meetings include a visit to a place of natural beauty which the students choose and do research about in order to reconnect with nature, appreciate its beauty and its need for preservation. All meetings aim at training students to become leaders to provide them with skills necessary for leadership such as effective communication in ESL, relationship building and empathy. This trains them for their future careers and prepares them for a global discussion about climate change. Considering the aspect of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) the project offers the students to practice ESL in very practical contexts not taught much at schools and the context of sustainabilty which is of utmost importance as climate change is such a crucial and dangerous process which demands its discussion and action in the future. Also, they are given the chance to learn about actual jobs related to sustainabilty which opens up possible career options for their future lives. Thus, students are prepared for communication about these topics for the future and for possible future careers which deal with these issues.
At the first student activity in Italy students deal with sustainable nutrition by evaluating their nutrition with regards to health and environmental issues (such as virtual water and food transport and its costs) and learning how to shop and cook responsibly. At the second meeting in Poland the students learn how to produce less waste and have a sustainable lifestyle by teaching and making DIY and upcycling projects. At the third meeting students learn to live sustainably by producing less emissions by anaylzing their carbon footprints and designing a solar panel. At the last meeting students learn how to make cities more environmentally friendly by making them greener through more green spaces, namely by building planter and insect boxes. Students will be trained to be Ambassadors of Sustainability and organize an event “Stop the Clock” at their schools after the project-funded time period. If possible this event is to be turned into an annual/regular event in the schools’ curricula to ensure long term benefits of the project in the school communities.
The impact of the project at long term will be the raised awareness of leading sustainable lifestyles at school including the students, their parents and the teachers. Benefits with regards to the local communities and an international audience are ensured by the dissemination of the project results such as DIY projects in an eBook.
