Photovoice is a qualitative method used in community based participatory research to document and reflect reality. It is an empowering and flexible process that combines photography with social action and is commonly used in the fields of education. Participants include community members/students of all ages and status including those who are discriminated against due to language, gender, race, class, disability, etc. Through their art, they bring new insights and perspectives which raise awareness of hidden or overlooked issues and aspects of the community.

Participants are asked to express their points of view or represent their communities by photographing scenes that highlight research themes. Common research themes include

community concerns, community assets, social issues, and public health barriers. These photographs are collaboratively interpreted through discussions in both small and large groups, and narratives can be developed that explain how the photos highlight a particular research theme. These narratives are then used to promote dialogue to mobilize and help change-makers (i.e. policymakers) better understand and change the community. Thereby developing effective solutions and programs that address the issues and needs.

The Photovoice used the Showed or Storytelling method, which helps to describe your photographs using 5 questions:

  1. What can you See here?
  2. What do you think is really Happening?
  3. How does it relate to Our lives?
  4. Why does this condition Exist?
  5. What can we Do about it ?

Storytelling

Learning how to tell a good story is important.  Storytelling is one of our most valuable tools in connecting with others.  The power of stories is capable of moving people to action far better than any threat or incentive you can throw their way.  Stories can relay important morals and lessons to children therefore it is a great tool to teach students about bullying, teach them  how to express their feelings connected with the bullying experiences and finding good solutions to the problems.
