Project Summary

Traditional sports and games are a means to convey values of solidarity, diversity, fair-play, inclusion, and cultural awareness. Moreover, traditional sports and games reflect cultural diversity and foster mutual understanding and tolerance among communities and nations. However, many traditional games have disappeared and those that survive face imminent disappearance. We as Europeans have a responsibility to revive an interest in these “old-fashioned” games.
Our project is aiming to revive and bring a part of our old culture into present, so it isn’t forgotten; to foster a healthy and sporty lifestyle putting these old games, as well as present games into practise; to get to know similarities and differences with other cultures through these old and new games; to get introduced to a new way of learning through digital tools.
Nowadays, in multicultural Europe, we have to combat racism and xenophobia and at the same time boost the self-esteem of all children. Through this project, we will tackle the aforementioned issues enhancing the European dimension of the school curriculum. This can happen by skipping the barriers of the different mother tongues of the pupils that participate since the games are a pleasant way to spend free time. Through this partnership, our pupils will engage in cross-curricular projects incorporating Language, ICT, Art, Music, History, and Geography. In this way, they will improve their research, communication and presentation skills and realize the common mutual tradition with the other European partners.
The objectives we want to address are:
to enforce the European dimension and to encourage the development of an intercultural sensibility;
to overcome the phenomenon of globalization that tends to standardize and cancel the essence and the individuality of a people;
to increase knowledge of the recent past of our territory and that of our partners;
to follow the evolution of games from recent past to our present days, and recognize in it, where possible, signs of globalization;
to get to know and use some innovative technological programs and share them with our partners;
to promote personal autonomy using multimedia tools;
to experiment with the potentials of new technology in everyday class use;
to consolidate English structures and lexicons.
We will use the method World Cafe concerning planning, evaluation, and updates so we can discuss a wide range of subjects. The inclusion of all is guaranteed and a direct assignment of tasks is possible. We will use several methods in our work with children like methods of cooperative learning and peer-to-peer, online discussion boards, game-based learning.
Teachers and all pupils will take part in the project. Only about 20 of students and 5 or 10 of teachers of each school will attend the activities which will be carried out abroad. But the other students and the teachers will be part of the activities at their own schools.
Schools will use e-Twinning in order to work together on the project. Also, a blog or a page on Facebook will be created to disseminate our project. Issues of the magazine we will be published in digital format in order to be Eco-friendly.
Dissemination activities will be an integral part of our project and we will have a dissemination plan after each activity because we want to create a change of practice in our schools resulting from our project.
Our project will have a positive impact on all levels because our work will be engaging and involving everyone at all stages.
We shall measure impacts administering evaluation forms at every stage of our work, to all the people involved, at various levels. If results aren’t positive, we will modify guidelines and methods to ensure a more effective working procedure to everyone.
Overall, it is expected that, through this project, an awareness of the importance of cultural and linguistic diversity within Europe will be promoted. As a result, this awareness will broaden horizons and strengthen the values towards combating racism, prejudice, and xenophobia. Also, the engagement of all students in meaningful activities according to their unique potentials will boost their self-esteem towards learning motivation.
