Project Summary
Partners: Bors Skola, Sweden, and Lycée Boucher de Perthes, France
Duration: 15 months
Participants: 28 students aged 14-16 years (14 from France and 14 from Sweden) and 2+2 teachers
Mobility dates: Half-way through the project, in spring term 2020 (2×6 days) in Bor (Sweden) and Abbeville (France)
The participating schools are partners on e-twinning since 2017 and this has already increased learning motivation, which is a common need of the schools. We now include more teachers and students, and in the long run the project is to be a starting-point for further international exchanges, including even more students, teachers and partner schools.
The main priority of “Citizens of tomorrow” is to support individuals in acquiring and developing basic skills and key competences. Thanks to a multidisciplinary approach on the subject of recycling, all 8 of the EU:s key competences will be addressed. Moreover, autonomy will be trained, both through students being responsible, individually and as a group, for the activities of the project to be carried out in time; and through the mobility itself which will require adaption to another culture as the students will stay at each other’s homes and schools. They thereby also improve their intercultural competence, openness to other cultures and foreign language skills (English for the French students and French and English for the Swedish students).
In the project, the students will compare the amount and methods of recycling of different materials in the two countries, and visit recycling plants in each country, in order to acquire insights that could not have been reached without an international exchange or in books. This sustainability project will give rise to discussions on environmental responsibility and increase the students’ awareness of the society in which they live. The use of working together on a particular theme is not only educational, but it also enhances the motivation to learn as students see the immediate benefit.
As the project is based on multidisciplinary, collaborative and cooperative work between French and Swedish students it will allow both to develop the autonomy of the pupils, the skills to be acquired as part of their training: use of the new technologies, taking initiative, working in autonomy and teamwork, critical thinking, ability to argue and synthesis, but also to bring young people to a greater openness to the possibility of studying or working abroad. The stay in both countries, in addition to the work of the project itself, includes visits from companies that will allow to work with civil society partners. Work in interdisciplinarity makes particular sense since students are required to use the skills acquired in all subjects, thus experiencing the meaningfulness of each subject for the total.
The students are involved in all stages of the project, from conception to implementation, and they get the opportunity to get involved individually and collectively in rewarding and learning tasks. The axes of the project are: preparation of the project: tasks prior to the realization of the campaign; meeting between pupils: pooling of work, synthesis and construction of the final task, digital exchange (eTwinning) to communicate and finalize the campaign for dissemination in France and Sweden.
The project objectives are multiple since the multidisciplinary project is based on an action approach: in addition to the languages English and French, this project involves teachers of science, geography/civics, mathematics and handicraft (creating from recycled materials).
– Linguistic objective: students will meet young Europeans and exchange with them to build the campaign; they will also come into contact with professionals as part of corporate visits.
– Cultural objective: discovery of an European institution, a city and cultural specificities.
– Civic goal: sharing values from a project on climate issues; to build one’s identity as a citizen and to engage in a responsible ecological approach (values of the Republic).
– Pragmatic, discursive and functional objectives: construction of the project, realization of a preliminary study allowing to appropriate the multidisciplinary achievements in relation to the programmes (drafting of questionnaires, use of the Google form, summary notes).
The strengths of the project: The action perspective is the major asset of this project: students will be able to mobilize their skills to build a campaign by working collaboratively in their language but also in another language. This work is rewarding, it includes a mobility that is stimulating in the implementation.
It allows to get in touch with companies and create contacts with civil society actors, or even create a professional network useful for the future of these young people. It allows to validate skills that students will be able to integrate in their CV by valuing their individual training course: it is a rewarding experience.
