Project Summary
The Erasmus+ project “Following the footprints of the emperors”, a cooperationbetween nine different schools from nine different European countries, has motivatedthe participants from Portugal, Croatia and Germany to cooperate further in a smaller-scale, joint project. A fruitful discussion about happiness and its various forms made clear to theaforementioned participants that happiness is a topic that is often widely ignored atour schools, although we were quickly able to show a wide variety of directconnections between happiness, schooling and education. That inspired us to developthe idea of a European project about happiness. In our eyes it is productive to includea Finish school in our cooperation, not only because it would be a means to widen ourcooperation both geographically and culturally, but also because research has shownthat the Finish are the world champions of happiness. Therefore, we installed aneTwinning group in November of 2019 to initiate and establish contact to a Finnishschool. It is the goal of our project to develop open educational resources (OER) and createmodules focussed on the topic of happiness that can be used by other schools interms of ideas and structure if they want to deal with it. By developing the differentmodules and intensively dealing with fostering and realizing happiness in schoolingand educational contexts at our schools, we wish to make our schools happier placesof learning and developement. The various modules deal with happiness in general and at schools in particular, stressand countermeasures, the influence of places of education and learning on motivationand success, positive learning, happiness in creative processes and the EuropeanUnion as a project of peace. The participating schools are all experienced in planning and realizing Erasmus+projects. Whereas the Finnish and Croatian schools are both high schools, thePortuguese and German schools are vocational colleges. The participating studentsare between 16 and 19 years old. The variety of activities to be carried out ranges from surveys, eTwinning projects, creative tasks (creation of logos, musical and artistic tasks, handicraft), a writingcompetition, the creation of manuals by learners for learners, examples of best-practise and learning materials that should all be integrated into the OERs. Thediversity of projects, methods and perspectives will keep students’ motivation highand addresses their own cultural, social and economic diversity. Integrating those OERs in class at the participating schools will have a long-termeffect. Both the Finish and German school plan to offer “happiness” as a compulsorysubject choice, the Croatian and Portuguese will use the materials in a wide variety ofsubjects, including social sciences, religious education and ethics, history, art, musicand English. The nature of the OER and their easy dissemination will enable otherschools to both use and develop the materials further and thus even widening theirintercultural and cross-cultural impact. It is therefore that the modules will be bothdeveloped in the languages of the participating countries and English.
