Project Summary
Project “Joyful integration” aims at raising the quality of education of pupils with special educational needs, including those with disabilities. The applicant and main beneficiary of the project is Primary School No. 51 in Lublin. Project’s implementation involved partner schools from Northern Ireland (Harberton Special School, Parkview Special School) and partner school from Sweden (Sodertorns Friskola). Partner schools were interested in the organisation and functioning of integration classes as well as in the exchange of good practises in the field of special needs students’ education.
Primary School no 51 is the biggest school of this type in Lublin. The establishment and functioning of the integration classes in our school proved to be a major challenge for teachers. Teachers are not experienced in the matter, therefore they need to verify their knowledge and attitudes with more experienced colleagues. Because the other public schools in Poland, in which integration classes are created experience similar difficulties, we have undertaken cooperation with schools from the countries of Western and Northern Europe, where the idea of integration has a long tradition.
Here is a brief characteristics of partner schools:
Harberton Special School is a school for students from an average to deep learning difficulties. It is also implementing and disseminating institution of innovative solutions in the field of education of such students, organizing accredited by the Queen’s University of Belfast courses for teachers in the area. At the same time, the school is interested in exchanging good practices developed in other schools, hoping for their adaptation and application. Due to extensive experience in the education of students with special needs, Harberton Special School served as an expert institution in the project.
Parkview Special School, together with Harberton school is a member of r North Irish Special Schools Cluster. Their activities in the area of special education complement each other. Parkwiew school educates students with profound learning difficulties. It focuses on the creative use of multisensory approach in education. This school fully supports integrated education and – therefore – is interested in the possibility of observing how different schools in other countries cope with difficulties concerning integration of special needs students.
Södertörns friskola is a Swedish independent school run by the Foundation established by its employees. This is a public school integration classes and a special class. The school has 15 years of experience in the field of assisted and the integration of pupils with special educational needs, succeeding on the field. Despite this, the school teachers still have urgent need for improvement in the field of teaching an inclusive and integrating, especially educational strategies, good practice and new methods of education of students with special needs educational facilities.
To achieve the main objective, which is to raise the quality of education of pupils with special educational needs and to improve the functioning of the integration classes occurred due to the completion of the following activities:
1. Training teachers during short-term joint staff training events and implement good practices observed in partner schools
2. The development of the following intellectual outputs:
– Standards concerning organization of the process of care and education of students with an official statement on the need of special education in Primary School no 51 in Lublin
– Bank of methods, forms of work and teching resources for educating students with special educational needs and/or disabled ones
– A study on the attitudes of teachers towards SEND-children in different countries on the example of Poland, Sweden and Northern Ireland
– Education of students with special needs with the European added value – the experience of schools in Poland, Sweden and Northern Ireland – article
The impact of the project on the entities interested in the project’s main objective, that is, improving the quality of education of pupils with special educational needs, turned out to be wider than originally planned. This happened thanks to the multiplying events undertaken, including the organization of planned International conference on the results of the project as well as meetings with the persons and institutions responsible for the shape and the financing of the education system (including v-ce President of Lublin, employees of the Municipal Bureau of Education in Lublin).
In the case of Northern Irish schools we held meetings with members of Parliament of Northern Ireland, Belfast municipal authorities (Deputy Mayor of Belfast), and in Sweden – The National Agency for Special Needs Education and Schools.
