Project Summary

International youth initiative “youthSAIL4creativity100” (May 2017 – May 2018) was creative and adventures way for young people from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia to learn about arts and culture from European, national and personal perspective while also developing their skills in in sailing and teamwork.

The main event of the project was when 26 young people from Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania together with professional skippers went on a learning adventure in the Baltic Sea with 3 sail training yachts to discover the multicultural past, present and future of their countries and Europe through discussions, field visits, traveling and together-developed creative workshops and art exhibition. The participants got the inspiration about 3 Baltic countries and their history and culture, meeting different nationalities and working together online, on the coast and in the sea, visiting different places, sharing their cultures and discovering others, and discussing the creativity, history and other culture-related topics. As the result, common art-exhibition was created during art workshops and later it was exhibited in all 3 partner countries to celebrate the 100-years-anniversary of their countries – Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania.

The objectives of this international youth initiative were:
*) to improve knowledge, skills and attitudes that are needed for young people to feel fully included in society and support each other both aboard and on land (young people organized their trip, workshops and exhibition, learnt to sail and work in international teams, etc.);
*) to explore the culture and the history of partner countries from personal to national and European perspectives (during working together in history and creative workshops as well as sailing);
*) to empower young people to become more active citizens using creative tools and practice art techniques (during different workshops young people discovered cultural aspects and learnt different art techniques);
*) to discover different art and sailing cultures in partner countries and on different ships to learn form each others’ best practices;
*) to create and organize their own international art exhibition as common present to the100-years-independence-anniversary of partner countries.

The learning focus was on 3 of 8 life-long learning competences: “Cultural awareness and expression”, “Mathematical competence and basic competence in science and technology”, and “Entrepreneurship and self-initiative”, but also other Youthpass competences were covered. The activities were based on the needs and interests of young people participating in the youth initiative project. The creative workshops were prepared and implemented by the participants of the projects and the coordinators team of the project. The program was developed based on non-formal education principles and methods. The activities involved practical sailing duties creating their own inner international “culture” aboard, practicing (peer education learning and teaching) different art techniques and creating the common art exhibition project, different discussions and creative workshops discovering deeper their personal, local, national and European culture from different perspectives.

The project activities were:
1) Online collaboration in international teams in a closed project online working space and face-to-face meetings in national teams to do the preparation for international activities and exhibition;
2) KICK-OFF MEETING in Lithuania for the joint coordinators’ team (27 July – 1 August 2017);
3) ART EXHIBITION CREATION AND SAILING MEETING in Latvia when the group of young people sailed the sea border of Latvia on 3 sail training yachts (16–28 August 2017);
4) 3 LOCAL CREATIVE SAILING EVENTS for local young people (1 in each partner country during the period of September-October 2017:
= EE = 16 Sepember 2017 in Tallinn, Estonia, on sail training yachts ST IV and Vesta (13 participants took part in this event, and the team sailed to the nearby island Naissaare where they did a mulitimedia challenge – to create 1 sec videos).
= LV = 1 October 2017 in Riga, Latvia in river Daugava and in Riga Bay on sail training yacht SPANIEL for local youth to share the sailing and the project outcomes so far. Two creative sailing trips were organized involving 16 young people. There were 2 parts of the event – sailing part and creative workshop making an installation with the sea knots. The 2 teams switched (while one was sailing, another contributed to the art installation).
= LT = 30 September – 1 October 2017 in Klaipeda, Lithuania on sail training yacht Odiseja. The team participated in local regatta.
5) Traveling art exhibition in each partner country (LV– Dec 2017/Jan 2018, LT – Jan 2018, EE – Mar 2018);
6) EVALUATION MEETING in Estonia to evaluate the project, participate in local regatta, visit Maritime Academy and work on the report and future plans (24 – 27 May 2018).
