Project Summary

The project targets teachers, youth workers and other education workers in Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Ireland and the UK. We hoped to build a partnership involving five projects of Show Racism the Red Card. The project was an opportunity to develop closer relations between partners, exchange practice, develop new methodology and increase the impact of the projects in the five countries.

Racism is an issue throughout Europe and is a corrosive influence detrimental to the social cohesion of our society. Education is critical to addressing the issue of racism over the longer term. This project seeks to build community capacity to tackle racism through providing a unique platform of education and sport to tackle racism.

Show Racism the Red Card UK was established in 1996 with the concept of producing education resources harnessing the role model status and profile of professional footballers to tackle racism. The project has since grown in the UK and other projects have been established in other countries including the five countries of this partnership.

The project has been a strategic partnership involving:
-exchange of best practice
-learning from others
-anti racism training for educators

The results have been:
– Closer relationship between projects
– Shared learning between projects
– Teachers and educators trained to recognise, respond and educate against racism
– New partnerships developed arising from new contacts from closer cooperation
– An anti-racism education template that can be rolled out elsewhere

In Ireland, anti racism training workshops were delivered with over 600 student teachers, with 260 taking our online course and in the UK, one day anti racism training was delivered to hundreds of teachers, while new innovative methodologies were explored and developed by the Finnish partner with the online educational gaming app Seppo. Relations have been developed and sustained involving the partners from Denmark and Netherlands. In terms of a template, the Seppo.io template is something which can be developed further and maybe form the basis to a new proposal.
