Project Summary

The project “Young European reporters: bringing differences closer, sharing realities” is the result of the personal and professional relationship between Isabel Hernández, a French teacher at IES Antonio Navarro Santafé (Villena, Alicante) and Myriam Boulet, a Spanish teacher, at Collège Saint Joseph of La Guerche de Bretagne and their enthusiasm to convey their students the importance of valuing and respecting other cultures and other people.
After applying for funding aid for staff mobility through training courses and professional observations (job shadowing) through K101 actions of the Erasmus + programmes requested in the 2018 call, it seems to us that the next step is to obtain European funding to carry out our students mobility.
We have applied for the support of the Erasmus + K229 programmes to facilitate the possibility of participating in a European project to those students at risk of social exclusion or with economic difficulties.
We also believe that it is a unique opportunity for teachers from both centres to exchange good practices and establish the basis to work on future European programmes promoting the modernization and internationalization of education.
With this project we intend to promote an inclusive education that encourages plurilingualism, respect for other cultures and ways of thinking and the integration of students with special needs.
We will produce a multilingual magazine as a final product that will deal with motivating issues for the educational community and that is based on a blog that will be able to be accessed through QR codes printed on each of the articles of the magazine.

OBJECTIVES

To make this final product and fit it into the development of our project, we set out the following objectives:

– Work collaboratively and a projects based learning methodology.
– Develop the linguistic competence in its four skills from a communicative approach.
– Promote the active citizenship of young people, in general, and their European citizenship, in particular.
– Promote reading.
– Use new technologies (creation and participation on a blog)
– Make use of graphic editors such us Illustrator, Photoshop and indesign.
– Develop and enhance creativity: illustrations, photos, stories …
– Use French, Spanish and English in other subjects such us: history, biology, physical education …
– Discover relevant aspects of the culture and heritage of each of the regions and countries.
– Promote peace, dialogue, tolerance and solidarity among young people from different regions of Europe.
– Disseminate what has been learned to the rest of our educational community and to our population and region.

PARTICIPANTS AND ACTIVITIES

At first, we applied for 10 students aged 12-16 years old and two teachers from each centre but finally we decided to have 38 students from each school. The project has the support of the teaching staff, the two management teams and the multilingualism committees. The selection of students will be made taking into account the following criteria:
– Participatory attitude and involvement in the subject.
– Economic and / or social difficulties.
– Not having participated in a school exchange before.

During the project we carried out previous activities (monthly missions), transnational activities (work notebook, exhibitions of work carried out, visits to relevant places) and evaluation activities (initial, formative and final through questionnaires to families, teachers and participating students).

Starting in September, students had to carry out a serie of missions that would constitute the sections of the magazine. The created materials would be shared in the e-twinning platform and on a blog associated to the web of each centre.

RESULTS

The result is the multilingual journal and the material generated for its preparation.
We carried out a work of dissemination of the magazine through the teaching staff centres and the local entities.

Collaborative work was carried out at the center involving a large part of the educational community, which implied a structural and sustainable change that could be maintained over the years.
This K229 action is a great opportunity to motivate our students and the rest of the educational community. It will develop the promotion of reading from the documents that the students will create from themselves and it will strengthen the education in European values.

In short, being part of a European project undoubtedly awakes interest, creativity, respect and active tolerance towards other cultures, reducing school dropout or social exclusion.
