Project Summary
1. Context – Timber is ecologically sustainable building material and the use of timber in construction is moving towards a more industrial production mode. Vocational training needs to understand this shift and develop a relevant response.
2. Goal – we want to develop a comprehensive understanding of the modern value-chain of timber and apply this to a discussion on the relevant vocational training
3. The participants are three schools and one university. Each school has 2 teachers/admin and 6 vocational students in the project. The university has 2 researchers. Total participants is 26.
4. The activities are one week sawmill, one week element building, one week construction and a half week in research facility.
5. Method – We will arrange introductory lecture including safety themes, we will work in factory situations at relevant companies, interspersed with short classroom discussions. There will be a reading list for each visit, and report writing during and after visits.
6. The results will be a more comprehensive understanding of the value-chain of timber and a keen understanding of where the construction sector is moving and where innovation is possible and needed.
7. The long term benefit for the school and their ecosystems will be a more relevant vocational training. For the students it will be a keen understanding of some European building traditions and modern developments in architecture and construction.
