Project Summary
As a recent international WHO-study has shown, there is a trend of insufficient physical activity among students aged 11–17 years by country, region, and globally. Moreover, both project partners observed that there is a decreasing interest in sport as a school subject. The increasing use of smartphones and other social media leads to a falling number of students being involved in team activities or communication outside the classroom, for example in breaks. Thus, our main target groups are students between 11 and 17 years, the group presented in the WHO-study mentioned above. This is why the idea of creating a project focused on both sport, childhood games and development of social skills came up.
Our main aims are the following:
– Development and promotion of social, intercultural and communicative competencies as well as a development of sport competencies.
– Integration of students of disadvantaged social background respectively from rural areas who get the opportunity to participate in an international programme in a mixed team.
– The opportunity to get to know, try out and develop both street games and cooperation games from another European region.
– Promotion of creativity and one’s own initiative.
– Creation of activities suitable for everyday use in and outside the school context
To reach our goals the project’s focus is on both formerly well-known games and sports activities that are developed by the participants. Carrying out this project, we would like to give the students the possibility to newly discover childhood and street games played by themselves or the older generation. Furthermore, new cooperative and team games should be developed in bilingual groups. Doing this, elements of ‘forgotten’ childhood games can also be combined with new elements in order to create different activities without much extra equipment. A clear focus should be on games and sport activities engaging the students to spend more of their spare time outside. As a means of documentation, a collection of rules and standards is developed and continuously expanded in the course of the project.
In order to do so, different groups of people in and outside both partner schools are involved. Project participants aged 15-17 years will have the chance to try out the collected and created games with younger students aged 10-12 years and also prepare and coordinate meetings with old age pensioners. The long-term goal is to integrate materials developed in the project in both school’s curricula and further use them in school life (lessons, extra-curricular activities and sport groups).
There will be 24 students actively involved in the exchange. The project is coordinated by 8 teachers of different subjects, among these both sports and language teachers. In addition to that, old age pensioners in both municipalities are invited to join the programme. They will be interviewed by our students and invited to sports events in the schools.
Our activities in both countries include regular meetings with the old age pensioners (Italy and Germany) and younger students (Germany), as well as the collection, practice and development of games and sport activities. Furthermore, rules and standards (booklets) are developed and spread locally. Continuous documentation and evaluation guarantees a further development of project results and allows accurate planning of the encounters.
A long-term use of products is possible due to the availability of project material and results on the school homepages. It is also possible to get print copies of rules and standards (flyers) at both participating schools. Along with that, the regional and local press will regularly be informed.
The overall aim is to create material for long-term use in both schools so that physical activity in and beyond sports lessons is further promoted and can be used by the whole school community. Our wish is to strengthen and keep the partnership between our schools and cities, which was officially founded in the year of 2018.
