Project Summary

Migration processes have been taking place within Europe for some time and we have all been influenced in some way. In relation to the German past, migration processes took place in the period after the Second World War, which originated in the context of the World War. In the next few decades there was a significant number of migrant workers who changed Germany socially and culturally to a great extent. In the pan-European context, there were links between all three partner countries, Germany, Greece and Italy, particularly in the case of labor migration. In this project, linked to the subject context, questions were examined that deal with the possibilities and also the consequences of migration movements for European societies. These migratory movements have been examined in different dimensions (then, now and in the future) and from the respective national perspectives. The social, political and economic aspects for European coexistence were discussed. Specifically, from a sociological perspective, e.g. the admission conditions and integration possibilities, but also cultural influences in the form of music, language and food culture illuminated. Politically, legal conditions and effects have also been taken into account, while in the economic area the chances of integrating migrants into the world of work, as well as the resulting costs, have been examined.
The participants in the project trained and expanded various skills. The pupils acquired and deepened their knowledge of the context of migration in the subject area. The three dimensions made comparative possibilities clear, which were also highlighted by the different national perspectives and were also treated controversially.

The connection between the goals and the priority “Social and educational value of the European cultural heritage” was made clear in the pan-European context, which illustrates historical and current experiences with the migration issue, and empathy for Europe was strengthened. Effects on our national European societies today were discussed in a discourse and opportunities and problems discussed. In the process, the aspect of integration was highlighted in line with the priority “social inclusion” and understanding of others was made tangible. With this project, the pupils and the teachers involved promoted skills in the areas of media, communication, empathy, interculturality, organization and foreign language.
Pupils and teachers who were involved in the project were participants from the schools of Gymnasium Bad Essen / Germany, Liceo Classico Scientifico Ariosto Spallanzani / Italy and GELDE Sapon / Greece. Those members of the project took part in the transnational project meetings, around 13 pupils per school and two teachers. There was a preparatory meeting of the teachers in Bad Essen, at which the organizational guidelines were agreed, as well as two meetings of the student groups with the accompanying teachers, which took place successfully in Greece and Italy. The third international project meeting had to be canceled due to COVID19. In the first phase, the pupils first worked individually in the schools and then across national borders in one of the three participating countries (“at that time”). The second phase, which worked organizationally in the same way, comprised the effects on the present day for European citizens and thus also on the pupils as individuals (“today”). In the third phase, the same procedure was followed by a look at the Future of Europe daring with regard to dealing with the migration issue (“in the future”). However, this working phase only took place in the individual national groups.
The project results were very diverse. A self-developed film on the topic of “Migration in Europe” in the overall context shows the pupils’ creative, media and organizational skills. Numerous presentations made in Greece prove the intercultural cooperation in both social and professional terms. The film sequences shot in Italy also testify to an intensive examination of the subject. The blog and the websites that were also developed provide insights into the media, communicative and technical areas of the overall project.

An expected long-term benefit becomes clear for all project participants, since they have received further training in many ways. The pupils in particular have gained considerable media skills and intercultural experience. The teachers have received communication, technical and organizational training. The schools involved will certainly benefit from this project in the long term in the sense of promoting European coexistence on many levels.
