Dealing with Bullying

Escape Game lesson plan

  1. Work with your students to find out what bullying is. Ask them a few questions:
  • What is bullying? What is cyberbullying? Why do students bully? Why are students bullied?
  1. What can we do? Discuss the following questions:
  •  What can students do to help? What it means to have legal protections/ to have your rights. What can teachers do to help? What can parents do to help? Make sure that each student has the opportunity to give the answer
  • Allow students to develop 3-4 things they think a law against bullying should have/do.
  1. Crumpled Paper Lesson :This short activity has been adapted from a story that has been circulating around the web
  2. Give your students a piece of paper and ask them to write some words that come to their minds connected with it about the paper texture. Then ask them to fold it and cramp it. After that ask your student to smooth it and get it back to the original state. Students ‘ task is to describe the state the paper is now using adjectives. Finally ask them a question : Is it possible to vanish what you did to the paper? Can you compare it to bullying? Tell the students that there are a lot of scars on the paper you can’t smooth. The same is with feelings. When you hurt somebody there is a trauma which can last for years and it cannot disappear. Ask the students about their feelings now.
  3. Now tell the students that you will play an escape game with them to find out some hidden clues and discover the case. Explain to them the rules of the Escape Game. It is connected with the consequences of bullying which took place in your school. Their task is to discover what had happened to one of their mates.
  4. Start the Escape Game using the technical sheet prepared by College Terrain Fayard.

Escape Game about Bullying.

Technical sheet.

Collège Terrain Fayard. Réunion Island.

  1. First step: The following message is given to the students:

« Victor, a 13 year-old schoolboy, has committed suicide. You have 50 minutes (i.e.a class) to find out the reasons why. There are 7 clues in the room. »

  1. First clue: a short story entitled « The Bullied girl » (written in French by one of our students).

The students have to crack the pin of the teacher’s laptop to be able to read the downloaded short story. The pin (it can be a postal code – 974 Reunion Island’s postal code) is displayed all over the classroom’s walls on many posters, maps, postcards.

  1. Second clue: a series of bullying text messages , it can be put on a Samsung Galaxy mobile phone.

As the short story is signed « Samsung Galaxy », the students have to:

  • find the phone (hidden in an unusual place or not depending on the pupils’ age),
  • crack its pin.

The pin (« N ») is « displayed » all over the classroom’s walls on many « Stop BULLY.. G » posters (with no « N »).

  1. Third and fourth clues: a set of 3 school reports with decreasing school marks together with an increasing number of delays and absences + a metal box.

An open schoolbag, with the 3 school reports sticking out of it and the locked metal box in it, is put right in the middle of the room or against the teacher’s desk depending on the students’ age.

  1. Fifth and sixth clues: the key opening the metal box + Victor’s diary.

The key is mixed with the other teacher’s keys on his/her desk.

Victor’s diary is in the metal box.

Contents of Victor’s diary:

  • pictures of coffins (« My next bed »), of tombs (« My future home »),
  • messages such as: « Be a buddy not a bully », « Help me », « Stop bullying », « Stand up and speak out », « Kill my bullies (if only they could disappear) », « We shouldn’t do to others what we don’t want them to do to us », « Why don’t the teachers listen to me ? », « I don’t want to go to school anymore », « Why am I always the one to be punished. Why? Why? », « I had a very pleasant day: they were absent », « I had a very bad day: they locked me in the toilet, as usual on Thursdays », « I could make a deal with the devil for him to help me », « If you’ve found my diary, it means I’m already dead » ….

Last message: « My friends, help me ! I wrote their names in my death note ».

  1. Seventh clue: The death note.

It is put at the very last minute (not to disturb the chronology of the escape game) in a very unusual place (a flowerpot, for example) or not depending on the students’ age.

The death note is typical of manga. The events depicted in death notes really happen.

Contents of Victor’s death note: his bullies’ names, the dates of their due death and the different ways they will die.

  1. The bullied girl story.
  2. „Every day I only think about dying! I’m sick of living  like this! But I cannot ! (A sob) Fear comes over me  every time I want to kill myself! How to handle it?  (Tears) ”
  3. Emilie was in the bathroom when she heard these  words. Terrorized, she hadn’t moved. She continued to listen quietly. The voice resumed:
  4. – „Why are the students in my class so cruel?” (Crying)  Am I that ugly? Yes, death would be the solution! Could  I swallow the tablets my mother hides in her cupboard?  Or better yet, in order not to suffer too much, I could  take the poison reserved for rats! ”
  5. Emilie heard the flush. She gently opened her door. She  saw a girl with long, dark, wavy hair washing her hands.  Difficult to see his face. Her black, voluminous hair hid  her face. She was thin and tall. Impossible for Emilie to  put a name on this mannequin body. The stranger left  the bathroom without looking back. Emilie was  desperate. She would have liked so much to know who  this girl was. In turn, she got out of the bathroom and  forgot to do what she had planned. She was in a hurry  to run behind this student to talk to her. But the young girl had disappeared. It was impossible to know who  she was.
  6. It was a difficult day for poor Emilie. She was not  feeling well. If only she had dared to talk to him. She  felt guilty for not having done anything immediately.  During math class, Emilie couldn’t concentrate. In his  head a voice said to him:
  7. „If she kills herself, what are you going to do?” You  need to tell someone about it quickly! To your  parents ? To the advisor? To your teacher? But to tell  them what? I don’t even know who this girl is! ”
  8. During the break, Emilie went to see school life in the  hope of finding the advisor. Once there, she saw guards  at work. No one saw her. Students lined up to justify an  absence or a delay. A student was explaining that he  got lost in the building. She could hear people talking  without really listening to them. Her head was  elsewhere, lots of images were in her head. Suddenly a  hand lands on his shoulder:
  9.  „Hey Ho! Emilie! Emilie! Are you dreaming ? a  supervisor had asked.
  10. No ! I would like to speak to the advisor please! she  replied with a sad voice.
  1. Is it urgent ? A parent is in his office. It will take a  while. I advise you to come back later. »Said the  supervisor who had just picked up the phone.
  2. Without waiting, Emilie left school. She had a stomach ache, she felt so bad. She went to the bathroom, but this time to relieve herself for real. When she finished  flushing the toilet, she paused to zip up her pants.  Beside her, noises were heard. Someone had come to  relieve herself as well. Emilie had not moved. She  waited and hoped it was this unknown girl.
  3. But after a few minutes, the door opened. It wasn’t  her! As she was about to leave her hiding place, a girl  entered the bathroom. She seemed in a hurry. Emilie  didn’t have time to see her face. She made herself very  small and waited.
  4. It was then that the voice of this disturbing young girl  was heard:
  5. „Every day I only think about dying! (Tears). I’ve had it  up to here ! But I cannot ! Fear comes over me every  time I want to kill myself! How to handle it ? (She’s  crying).
  6. Taking courage in both hands, Emilie decided to open  the door where this distressed student was.
  7. – ” Hey ! What’s going on ? Why are you opening my  door like this? asks the surprised girl.
  8. – You have to talk to the advisor and your teacher.  Bullying must be reported. You don’t have to suffer like  this anymore! Emilie suggested.
  9. – No, I’m not bullied! (She laughs). I’m learning my lines  for a play. We are going to speak out against bullying at  school, explained the student.
  10. – In any case, you play your role well! I really thought  you were being bullied! ”
  11. The two students continued to talk in the playground  about this theater project.
