Project Summary
Our two schools had already worked together on an e-Twinning project, following face-to-face contact at an e-Twinning conference. This project allowed us to build on our working relationship and involve more staff and other school stakeholders. As the name of the project implies, PEARLL (Partnership to Evaluate and Review Language Learning) involved us acting as critical friends to evaluate and review our modern language provision. Both schools were keen to improve the teaching and learning of modern foreign languages within their own schools by improving the level of key competences and skills of teachers involved in the teaching of languages. In year one, each school carried out an initial peer review of teaching and learning of modern foreign languages within the other school, involving lesson observation, pupil voice, work scrutiny and data analysis. As a critical friend, staff offered suggestions and shared good practice about teaching methodology, staff training and resourcing. In year two, the plan was that each school complete a follow-up peer review process, with a focus on the implementation of recommendations from the previous year. One follow up review was completed however the COVID-19 pandemic meant that one of our follow up reviews was unable to take place due to school closures and travel restrictions.
However, the impact of the project pre the pandemic was nonetheless evident. There is improved teaching and learning of modern foreign languages, with language learning taking place involving other subject areas. Moreover, cultural awareness and the importance of the international dimension was raised in both schools. There was also a positive impact on staff motivation and retention. Additionally, the Applicant Organization leads the ALL (Association of Language Learning) East Sussex Primary Hub and shared project results with partner schools.
