Participants of the MISSION POSSIBEL: HEALTH 2017-2019 project were students of lower and upper secondary schools aged 14-18 from Poland, Turkey, Greece and Spain. Groups of 20 students from each school were directly involved. Other students were also involved in the project activities (about 500 – through participation in workshops, competitions, educational trips). We estimate that the project indirectly covered about 5000 people (students, teachers, parents, local environment). Participants focused on the topic “Health”. Health, which is such an important factor in the development of society, was the basis on which the acquisition of knowledge in the field of science of youth, but also adults. Students acquired knowledge in an active way: through practical tasks, experiments, searching and developing data, cooperation with various institutions and centers – using regional and local opportunities. ICT was widely used. Activities planned and implemented in the project included research on water, food, herbs and plants of health importance, collecting information, compiling and presenting data, implementation of activating activities, such as laboratory tests, didactic games, quizzes, competitions, participation in classes at universities and research units, meetings with specialists who are thematically related to water, nutrition, forest management, ecology, botany. Classes also took into account the participants’ physical activity along with attention to the importance of physical activity for the health and development of each person. As part of the project, wandering, physical exercises and sport activities were carried out in each country.
The results that the students achieved were, among others raising their knowledge in the field of natural sciences and the ability to present information using mathematical and statistical methods – multimedia presentations, exhibitions, films, conclusions from conducted research. Teachers have enriched their work skills through the exchange of knowledge, which has contributed to improving the quality of work of partner schools and increasing their rank in the environment. The results have been confirmed by evaluation studies.
The parents of the students as well as local and regional institutions took part in the activities. We engaged local government and education authorities. Another goal was to develop social skills and intercultural competences.
The project is transnational and helps to instill the idea of cooperation in an international team. It gives teachers and students the opportunity to develop and reflect on learning and teaching in a diverse group of people. Through project activities with peers from other countries, students could acquire knowledge and experience directly and immediately. They changed their view of the culture and tradition of other countries, became more open to change and diversity. They improved their ability to use English. The project has made a significant contribution to the education of young people and has affected the life values of participants.
