Project Summary
Scarborough UTC provide an academic and technical Education for students who have interest in modern engineering processes, computer science and cyber technologies. Scarborough UTC is a young organisation that is nationally backed by the UK government through the Department for Education, Baker Dearing Trust and industry support from local, national and international companies.
As an institution only 18 months old we are keen to develop a successful heritage and in our context it is vital that we look further afield to assure our students social development and global communication skills. In the UK technical colleges are new exploration in education, we feel that our students would gain important knowledge from understanding traditional engineering skills and the integration with design and weapon technology. This such experience over many generations is what we seek. This cannot be found in the UK.
HTL Ferlach provides technical education for Weapon Technologists as well as for the management of Production Processes and
Industrial Design. Ferlach is famous for the craft of gunsmithing and is a member of the world’s cultural heritage. The
combination of craft and modern technologies is a main part of the curriculum which has been established over generations. Students from all over the world come to Ferlach to improve their technological knowledge, and we at Scarborough UTC feel that our students would benefit from such skills and moreover we will expand the minds of the students we work with.
Scarborough is a coastal town in North Yorkshire, and although scenery is quite stunning, isolation and deprivation levels are high due to its geographical position. There are many large scale employers who desire improved skill, education for their future employees.
The project “Technology for the young generation” aims at the expansion of the learning space to European dimensions. Scarborough UTC offers different approaches to technical problems to that of HTL Ferlach. These different
approaches are owed to the historical, cultural, social and political circumstances of North Yorkshire. Scarborough UTC has many industrial companies as a background who act as supporters of the school in financial, material matters, expertise and professional business support.
Within two exchange periods in 2018/19 twenty students of Scarborough UTC from a range of technological disciplines will travel to HTL Ferlach to study, fulfill practical tasks, share values, socialise, explore and learn the lives and skills of our european partners.
topics. The idea of our co-operation is establish a student-exchange in both sides, that will develop to share professional expertise for the benefit of both communities, one situated at on the beautiful North sea coast at the edge of North Yorkshire National park and the other in the stunning Alps of Karnten. This exploration will have a life changing effect on students who as a result will enter there technological careers confident and looking outward.
Scarborough UTC will stay for two weeks in Ferlach and continue with their working tasks and projects they started previously in the UK country. The students will cooperate for four weeks, in this time they should learn from each other, the local students should act as tutors for the guest, they will form a community and at least this could lead into a life long friendships and professional cooperation.
The roles in this projects can be clearly defined as follows:
The receiving organisation “UTC” in Scarborough will prepare a programme for two weeks for the
students including practical tasks as well as cultural events and visits of companies whose output are technical products.
The following topics will be part of the project:
The plan in Scarborough will include the following topics:
Workshop activities:
Working with manufacturing equipment to produce the needed parts for the mechanical device
Dealing with drawing and calculating the main parameters of the certain parts. CAD Master classes.
Assembling the product – use of composites and 3D printing.
Visiting Manufacturers.
Visiting companies in North Yorkshire
Cultural and social activities (Surfing, City of York, Water park etc)
Engineering visit to Flamingo land/ Alpamare water park
Visiting cultural events
Seeing architectural highlights in Scarborough which is the second town after London regarding the number of tourists.
it must be mentioned here that this project is based on reciprocity. The HTL Ferlach acts as a receiving institution for students from
from Scarborough. We will split our activities in periods of four weeks. Within two weeks students from Ferlach will
in Scarborough, and two weeks students from the partner-schools will travel to Ferlach. Our aim is to
establish cooperation, communication and at least friendship among the students.
We aim to develop cooperation and use Ferlach as an example of European cooperation.
