Project Summary

It is a fact that in the list of lifelong learning competences, in addition to critical thinking, creativity is the key competences for addressing environmental as well as social local as well as global challenges and solutions. The notion of creativity consists of the fundamental ideas such as “making something new”, “perceiving old things in new ways”, “finding new connections”, or “provoking pleasant surprises” (Maley 2003). While being youth workers, coaches and mentors to young people, we are also experienced Dungeons and Dragons game leaders, and because the method seems to have tremendous potential for addressing global environmental challenges, this time we are preparing a project to deepen the method, expand the range of materials and content, and train additional youth workers for quality use of the method in local and international settings. The project will consist of two trainings for youth workers, the creation of a database, infographics, a publication of scenarios, a research of the competence model of D&D players, and promotional and educational videos, which will be disseminated as results of the project and ensure the visibility of the results, organizations as well as the Erasmus + programme. After the initial training for youth workers, participants will conduct a total of 25 Dungeons and Dragons sessions on global education topics in their own local settings, with accompanying reflection and evaluation activities. In doing so, they will disseminate the method in their own communities, enable local youths and other participants to express themselves creatively through role-playing, and seek innovative solutions to current global challenges. Through the simulation part of the game, the participants will directly face the challenge and try to solve it in their own creative way, the results will be primarily a reflection of their thinking and the set of circumstances that are represented through the seven unique dies (because everything there is a possibility to succeed or fail).
At the second training for youth workers we will share experiences from local events, evaluate them more deeply and ensure quality use and a set of methods on the online online platform, which will be disseminated, together with the method, at the Slovenian Convention on Fantasy and Science Fiction “On the Border of the Invisible”.
Because the dynamics of Dungeons and Dragons include many aspects of non-formal learning, teamwork, group dynamics, power relations, participatory decision making, it is ideal for finding alternatives and innovative solutions to your chosen topics. The scenarios are transferable into different localities, from which we will receive feedback on alternatives and solutions on a particular topic by implementing one of the scenarios. The results will be presented on an online platform, through dissemination events, as well as in publications and online publications of all partner organizations.
