Project Summary

The project “Show me what you eat and I tell you who you are” dealt with the topic of healthy diets and their connection to globalisation, industrialisation, ecotrophology and the work of European Food Councils. The project was divided into three steps which are focussing on the topics of “Our traditional dishes”, “How healthy is our food and where does it come from?” and “Healthy and sustainable nutrition of the future” and its (necessary) regulations in each participating country. During the project meetings the transnational groups presented their results and outcomes of the steps and discussed the issues of each certain topic.
All of the partners confirmed the importance of the given topic for their country and school equally, due to their location in rural areas and their regional dependence on agriculture and food production – except for the Turkish partner school which is located in an urban area.
During the first step of the project, the participants focussed on regional and traditional diets in their country’s past. Specific geographical and climatic aspects were considered and retained in form of poster presentations. Those posters which were prepared according to aligned criteria, were also the basis of an exhibition during the first meeting in Turkey. Furthermore, traditional dishes of each country were cooked together. For that specific purpose, students prepared video tutorials in advance in which they presented the recipes of those traditional dishes and published them on the project’s website.
A survey on healthy food and eating habbits was created as preparation for the second stage of the project. The results were evaluated in the form of statistics during the second meeting.
For the second step of the project, central aspects like meat, salt and sugar, modern farming, globalisation of food and healthy diets were elaborated based on the division of labor. Each school worked on one of these aspects and prepared their own material and plan for dealing with their topic during the second meeting in Italy.
The last step on our healthy and sustainable nutrition of our future focused on the issues of modern food that were mentioned throughout the whole project. Each student prepared a specific role for the final simulation game of a European Food Council – farmers, environmentalists, politicians, nutritionists and lobbyists of food industries. Goal of this simulation game was to find a balance between regional and global food production and eating habbits as well as demonstrating possibilities that regulations on a European level might have.
Language acquisition and language variety was promoted by using different foreign languages during the encounters either in oral or written form. The participants got in touch either in person or virtually in order to work on special tasks like the preparation of different professionally designed posters concerning the topic. Therefore, various competences of the participants were improved, for example language and media skills.
All products of the project were documented, evaluated and made publicly accessibe. Furthermore, the usage in an interdisciplinary school context (geography, biology, chemistry, history, foreign language classrooms and social sciences) was and is still targeted.
