Project Summary

The project “EAEY – Empower African and European Youth!”, coordinated by Wereld Esperanto-Jongeren Organisatie (TEJO) involves four youth organisations from Europe (Netherlands; Poland; Italy; Slovakia) and four from Africa (DR Congo, Togo, Benin, Burundi). The project aims at improving the transfer of knowledge between Europe and Africa, thus strengthening the cooperation between the two continents in the field of youth. The overarching theme is “Youth working together to overcome the North-South-Divide”. The project lifespan is 17 months and its work will be centred around 4 EU-Africa activities, a mobility of youth workers (job shadowing) and a youth exchange activity: 1) management and kick-off meeting in Benin in September 2016; 2) job shadowing activity from Burundi to Italy and vice versa (April 2017-July 2017);3) expert workshop and training of trainers in Italy in April 2017;4) youth exchange activity at the World Esperanto Youth Congress in Burundi in July 2017;5) project meeting at the World Esperanto Youth Congress in Burundi in July 2017;6) final meeting in Poland, at the Youth Esperanto Week in December 2017.Two partners in Europe and two in Africa will host project meetings, so that all partners will be able to learn about the working conditions and backgrounds of youth work and non-formal learning in different EU and African countries. A job shadowing activity will provide hands-on training to four youth workers, two from Burundi and two from Italy, who will learn by supporting the organisation of two major events: the International Youth Festival in Italy (April 2017) and the World Esperanto Youth Congress in Burundi (July 2017). An important milestone will be the youth exchange to be held in Burundi in July 2017. The activities focus on different skills and training content to be developed to build the capacity of youth organisations and to improve the visibility and quality of youth work. The two pedagogical approaches are “learning from each other” and “learning by doing”. Methods and guidelines as well as trained personnel will ensure that young people from EU and African countries meet at eye-level and show respect to different ways of living and thinking. Each activity uses a different type of mobility and methodology following the plan of the overall project results to be achieved. This multiple-step approach is intended in order to provide the participating youth workers as well as their organisations and societies with a good overview on non-formal learning activities supported by the Erasmus+ Programme. The main project outcome is expected to be a mobile training app, developed and improved on the basis of exchange of best practices and training activities; as an overall result, the project is expected to strengthen the cooperation between the organisations involved and beyond the Consortium’s borders, thanks to an effective dissemination strategy, through worldwide youth events and media activities.
