Project Summary
The project “Live Healthily in a Healthy Environment” was done by Polish, German, Turkish and Dutch lower secondary schools. The cooperation was carrying out between the 4 schools by about 115 teachers and students directly and indirectly about 2500 students. There were about 150 parents who took part directly in the project. Through the posters distributed in the local area, articles published in the local press and films disseminated on the Internet (Turkish school) the project had indirectly affected the local community.
Collaboration between the four schools was facilitated through three years’ communication before the start of the project. The main tool of communication was the Internet and English was the language used by all the participants during international conferences, mobility meetings and other events . The main objective of the project was to promote a healthy lifestyle and natural world protection issues among students, their families and local societies.
The topics of our project was connected with school subjects like: Biology, Physics, Chemistry, ITC, English and PE . That’s why it was resulted in enriching the knowledge and improving the key competences of the subjects.
International cooperation gave a lot of opportunities for enhancing mobility of teachers and students and let them be more open-minded and tolerant for other nations and their culture.
The project helped young learners to gain a better self- assessment and improve their attainments, which allow them to continue their studying in spite of some obstacles connected with personal, social and economic difficulties. The project activities were planned for partner schools and their students, partner schools teachers, students’ parents, and local communities.
The new, active methods were used in order to encourage projects’ participants to learn from their partners within international workshops, additional science, nature and PE lessons, educational trips and making presentations. The students carried out their own researches, gathering data and drawing conclusions.
The students worked collaboratively, discussed materials while role-playing, debated, engaged in case study, took part in cooperative learning, or produced short written texts connected with the project’s topics.
The discussion was held to think critically on the subject matter and use logic to evaluate their and others’ positions.
It helped students develop skills of synthesis and integration. The student debates gave them a chance to participate in a fun activity but it also let them gain some experience with giving a verbal presentation.
The team work and “learning by doing” were the most popular methods in the project and they brought cooperative learning, positive attitude, individual accountability, face-to-face interaction, deeper understanding, social skills and better relationship with peers.
The main tangible products of the international cooperation is a brochure; ”Live Healthily in a Healthy Environment”, multimedia presentations on the alternative sources of energy, which are used in the partner’s countries, a multilingual dictionary with the important words connected with the project’s topics, a few leaflets in national languages with recipes for healthy dishes, a common blog, written materials with photos on each school website, printed materials used during workshops and extra lessons and lessons scripts for project’s school subjects.
Our project increased science literacy, developed basic and transversal skills, strengthened the profile of the teaching professions, improved language and ITC skills. Participants also gained interpersonal and intercultural skills. They became more-open minded and they changed their attitude towards teaching and learning.
Teachers gained new work experience and introduced new more creative and interesting methods, which encouraged their students to participate in the additional lessons and to learn science subjects.
The students changed their behavior, as they were more responsible for their learning and actions. They became more aware of their diet, sports activities and ecological issues. They were more interested in taking part in PE lessons and buying healthy drinks and food. The cooperation between local authorities, ecological, health and sports organizations developed and the cooperation resulted in improving the quality of life and lower pollution in their regions.
The project influenced on the schools work, their teachers, students and local community. The schools and teachers gained new approaches towards teaching, students were encouraged towards further learning, parents saw better chance for their children in the schools and local people respected the schools as they became the European institutions with a better offer of education.
The school in Juszczynie, through the project, has become a pioneer in the fight against the huge air pollution that is occurring in our region in winter.
