Project Summary
The project “Healthy steps to better future” arose from the problems that we encounter every day in our schools regarding the unhealthy lifestyle of our students. According to research, every fifth child does not eat the right breakfast, and as for sweet and sweet sodas it is true more often than once a day. Every sixth child is at risk of being overweight and has problems with concentrating and general fitness that affect their development badly. About 35% spend 2 hours a day watching TV and up to 4 hours of playing computer games and does not play sport regularly. Many students and their families are unaware of the consequences of unhealthy eating, avoiding physical activity, lack of sleep and spending time in front of a computer screen and TV. These consequences are primarily health problems such as physical fatigue, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, impaired concentration or hyperactivity but also psychological as lack of self-esteem and faith in success, shyness, bad mood and even depression.
These consequences often interfere with the child’s proper functioning at school, lowering their chances to fully use educational and physical abilities, i.e. to achieve success, which is one of the basic human needs .
The Polish school as a coordinator and four partner countries from Lithuania, Greece, Italy and Spain noticed the above problems and the need to solve them. All schools have experience with projects promoting a healthy lifestyle and ideas for solving them, but they have come to the conclusion that it is necessary to exchange these experiences and implement common ideas and good practices in all partner schools to intensify actions to improve the situation.
The project is planned for 2 years, during which 5 mobilityies are planned (4 short-term exchanges of groups of students and 1 short-term staff training), the participants will be teachers and students aged 10-13 and our project’s goals will be:
-comprehensive education regarding a healthy lifestyle, in particular healthy eating and physical activity
– education in children and their families pro-health attitudes and awareness of the relationship between unhealthy nutrition, and the occurrence of many diseases and ailments and the relationship between a healthy diet and physical activity and better results in learning
– educating parents as the people on whom the whole family lifestyle depends and convince them that it is worth taking care of healthy eating and regular physical activity
– equipping teachers with the knowledge and tools necessary to promote and implement pro-health attitudes
– raising the European potential and language competences of teachers and students, as well as skills in working on international projects.
– raising tolerance and knowledge about the culture of partner countries.
The goals are combined with sectoral priorities: supporting schools to tackle early school leaving and disadvantage and promoting the acquisition of competences and skills and with sectoral priority: social inclusion.
The planned results of achieving the above objectives will be an effective and long-term program of health education in every school, high knowledge of teachers and families of students on the importance of and ways to implement the principles of healthy life on a daily basis, active and well-nourished students who can independently plan a healthy meal and actively spend time, students open to other cultures seeking to interact with their peers in the world, students and teachers motivated and believing in themselves, teachers planning work on international projects, better speaking a foreign language, willingly exchanging experiences and good practices, community involved in the project and using its results in the future.
Achieving the results will be possible through project activities such as trainings, workshops with specialists, student and teacher exchanges, eTwinning projects, organization of health and sport days, running health food gardens, sports events, etc.
Long-term benefits resulting from the project are passed on to successive years of students good practice of taking care of comprehensive development including health care as a means to achieving greater successes, schools involved in the project will gain knowledge and tools to implement methods to promote and apply healthy living principles but also will gain long-term partners to solve further problems appearing in schools and further exchange of ideas and practices. In addition, project participants will be open to Europe and the world, they will not be afraid to participate in international ventures, which will give them a chance for a better future and greater professional opportunities. Commitment to the project will unite school communities and involve them in school life. The disseminated results of the project will help other schools and institutions to make changes and give them the right tools to achieve that.
