Project Summary
The EU Erasmus+ project entitled “Let’s build a bridge between generations” was realised by 5 partner schools: from Poland, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Portugal and Turkey. They represent different types of schools: general, vocational and special. The diverse specifics of the institutions allowed for a multidimensional, rich exchange of experiences of people representing various backgrounds which took place during international partner meetings in each country.
The project proved that young people have ideas, and older people have experience and wisdom in life. Mutual learning gave all participants a chance to develop, taking into account their physical and intellectual skills and different needs. Project activities focused on counteracting the social exclusion of older people, creating an opportunity to involve them in various activities that foster relationships and fight stereotypes.
The main reason for the project was to build an intergenerational bridge, which became a platform for the exchange of experiences and mutual education.
The measurable effect of the project activities was:
– saving from oblivion the values and traditions that are the foundation of the reality of young generations and seniors;
– instilling respect for people, breaking stereotypes;
– eliminating the exclusion of the elderly;
– making young generations aware of the essence of intergenerational dialogue and the mutual benefits resulting from it, and emphasizing the value of European cultural heritage in society.
We have achieved the following goals:
-we have established intergenerational cooperation, reduced the distance between generations;
-we increased the awareness of young people related to the perception of seniors;
– we made students, as young people who are starting to build their world and create reality, to include in this world both the young and the old, whom they will become themselves one day;
– we have helped young people to build their own value system on the foundation of basic ethical principles that are still alive among the older generation;
– we made young people aware that they gain more by offering their time and attention to others;
-we have activated and included seniors in social activities;
– we increased the self-esteem of project participants;
-we increased the competences of seniors in the use of digital technologies in everyday life;
-we have awakened a sense of responsibility for common values on the regional, national and European level.
The activities of the partner schools included workshops entitled: “Share your passion”. These are meetings during which seniors taught young people, for example, handicrafts, and the young generation taught seniors, for example, how to use social media. An important event was the workshop “Internet – not so terrible devil”, during which students introduced seniors to using the Internet. An important initiative was the establishment of groups of volunteers cooperating with seniors. A series of meetings entitled “Tell me your story”, during which seniors shared their experiences. The accompanying result of these meetings was the e-book “Superheros”, a book presenting the profiles of people who can serve as role models for young people promoting expected behaviour patterns. An attractive form crowning the cooperation is the “Generations in the lens” calendar. Regional workshops were also organized, the aim of which was to familiarize young people with broadly understood culture. Seniors were stimulated by regular meetings under the slogan “Live healthily”, promoting an active lifestyle. Partner schools got involved in designing the project’s logo and producing T-shirts. The scenarios of individual activities were used by teachers and will also be used after the end of the project. The project “Let’s build a bridge between generations” created opportunities and encouraged school communities to pursuit intergenerational cooperation, engaged local communities to activities for the sake of seniors and their activation.
