Project Summary
Our multinational project “New lifestyle due to climate changes” adresses the perhaps biggest global challenge today, namely the Climate Crises (Not to mention the corona pandemic!). Awareness and concern about the consequences are rising around the world, especially in Europe and so are the demand for political action and solutions. Young people has played a significant role in this awareness and demands.
The main priority/objective of the project is to let the students get the opportunity by visiting each other to experience and understand the perhaps different consequences of the mutual global climate crises in different countries, and how they deal with it. This will also improve another purpose of the project, which is to increase the social and cultural/”international” skills. Seeing things, discussing and learning from other points of view will help the young people to understand and respect other kind of choices.
These objectives are realized through four activity meetings in four quite similar Northeuropean schools (General education, secondary level) in Tampere (FIN), Neustrelitz (GER), Ventspils (LAT) and Stövring (DEN). The project work consists of three parts: Preparation of the theme of the single activity meetings in national groups (all participating students), activity meetings (seven students from each country working together in multinational groups using English and finally after the meetings the participating student will spread the knowledge and information to the whole national group.
During the whole project eTwinning will be the platform both for communication during and between activity meetings and for uploading different kind of materials (programs, schedules, products, evaluation etc.), i.e. to use it as a common bank of knowledge of the project.
The themes of the four activity meetings are covered by the following titles: “Tampere – full of energy”, “Fight against climate change”, “Climate changes – fight or adapt” and “70% reduction – Wind or what?”.
First in Finland the fokus will be on “Energy” in a broad sense. Through observing and learning from the point of climate change, we visit an energy power plant and a large building/ecosystem that has the energy budget and plan. We learn from one or two lessons considering future food and it´s production/farming. We also get more knowledge about decreasing waste and recycling, traffic and moving from place to place with less energy. As product, there are plans of future meals and the environmental efficient school. There are also bulletins made, how to save energy/how to minimize waste/how to protect biodiversity by the participates.
Then in Germany the key question will be: How do we create and increase the awareness of the climate crises and its consequences among especially young people? This will be done among other things by visiting places, where the effects can be seen and listen to experts in the field. The product will be a film.
In Latvia there will be focus on one particular effect/consequence of climate change, namely coastal erosion. Ventspils is located at the Baltic Sea and the changes in climate and weather conditions has increased the coastal erosion with servere impact and consequences to the city as well as its inhabitants. Through excursions, expeditions, lectures and discussion the student will learn about these things. The product will be a film.
Finally in Denmark there are two main issues for the week: 1) (social science) How can the society, the businesses and the individual citizen contribute to reach the goal of reducing emission of CO2 with 70% in 2030 and is it at all possible to reach this goal, which the Parliament made a law. 2) (science) How can wind energy contribute to a more “green” energy supply? We will visit businesses, talk to experts and discuss solutions. The products will be posters and business plans for entrepreneurs, who deals with innovative solutions to climate related problems.
As the result of each meeting different kind of products are produced (as seen above). However there is one product, that is compulsory for each meeting, and that is a small film of the week. From these films one film with English subtitles will be made at the end of the project, which will represent the final common result/product of the project.
When the project is finished the student will have learnt a lot of facts about climate issues, but they will also have got a broader and more nuanced insight in, that climate challenges and their consequences can be very different and dealt with very differently in different countries. Likewise living together and working together in transnational groups in a foreign language with young people from other countries will improve their social and cultural/”international” skills. All in all it will help them as students, workers and european citizens in the future. And hopefully it also can be a small contribution in the fight against climate changes!!!
