Project Summary

MOVERE, DOCERE, DELECTARE through Reading is the title of our project, these triad being used by Cicero and Aristotle. We looked at these terms as main goals of reading: to sensitize, to teach and to delight. Started as an e-Twinning project on the idea that reading and ICT are a perfect match to rise students’ competences, widen their horizons and build cultural bridges between students from different countries, it was later launched on the Erasmus+ section in e-twinning by the Romanian founder. A team of 6 determined partner teachers from Bulgaria, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania and Turkey was at work in a closed group on Facebook and developed a common strategy based on Reading purposes, involving both primary and secondary schools. Same initial/final questionnaire on reading habits, given to the pupils in their native language, was meant to reveal our organizations’ needs and to have clear diagrams of results before and after the project activities, in order to compare them. According to the results, 80% of the primary students like reading books but this percentage goes down to a worrying 35% in secondary level. We intended to develop a stronger link between the two levels and to raise older students’ interest in reading and keep it alive! MDD project focused on improving basic skills, creativity, culture and ICT competences, aiming at 5 objectives: more than 600 students from primary/secondary level were involved in 20 common reading, writing, speaking activities, using modern ICT tools in formal/non-formal contexts, in cooperation with 100 teachers, learning about volunteering, European awareness and cooperation; reading and writing skills of students improved significantly, being involved in writing MDD digital newspaper in their native language and English; specific tasks in every activity involved 30 SEN (special education needs) students from the partner countries, assuring social inclusion and combating discrimination; teachers took part in short-term staff trainings, to enrich their methods and approaches to reading; teachers have strengthened educational ties with the European partners, getting to understand school systems better while exchanging good practices. The above objectives were pursued through common, monthly activities for both levels: reading and writing in the mother tongue and in English to take part in reading and essay/drawing competitions and collaborative story telling, use of different digital tools to present our creative outputs, an E- book and 6 Comic Books, manage a digital newspaper, involving stakeholders – parents, libraries, actors, universities and famous people – in activities aimed at developing interest and motivation in reading, volunteering and social activities, videos, performing a play, speaking in English on skype sessions debates. An overall number of 100 teachers helped 600 students (aged 8-16) to develop the different planned activities. The teaching team consisted of 25 literature teachers, 15 English teachers, 15 ICT teachers, 6 Art teachers, 4 teachers for SEN students and 35 primary teachers. The methodology chosen encompassed different and interwoven methods. The student centered method were used in all interactive and experiential activities, an innovative and creative method offered them a digitally enriched learning environment, the communicative language teaching method was used to promote speaking and vocabulary enrichment while dealing with reading activities. By the help of transnational interactions, dialogues and visits, students discovered different cultures and became open-minded European citizens more active and respectful of differences, developing their multilingual skills. ICT tools such as Kahoot, Socrative, Powtoon, google drive apps, Comic books made with specific websites, the common E- book, and the digital newspaper empowered both students and teachers with new, modern ICT skills. Teachers of the all partner schools shared experiences, ideas, methods and didactic materials which broadened their knowledge. Our project was meant to produce a long-term impact on the partner schools, developing positive relationships between students and all the participants in the project: teachers, parents, community, leading to better school results. MDD website, activities, results were known through disseminating activities, involving local press, teachers meetings at the beginning and the end of each year, parents meetings, e-Twinning, the national conference on Erasmus+ projects, the Romanian educational portal: didactic.ro. Partner Institutions presented their best practices, innovative teaching methods, thus being in a challenging environment, they experienced school management in a different context and developed the European dimension in school policy.
