Project Summary
Europe is facing an unprecedented flow of people forced to flee their countries, and who struggle everyday to better integrate in our societies. Especially young refugees pay the higher price, being inexperienced, unsupported, uncertain about their future.
Italy, Spain, and Malta represents the doorstep of Europe on the Mediterranean. Due to their geographic position they have always been the first destination for refugee flows; also, share a similar past of crossroad between different cultures.
Through this project, we took benefit from this multicultural nature, and created – once again – innovative cultural and artistic encounters. Taking advantage of the foundation of every culture’s heritage – that is to say, myths, legends, folktales, eventually TABOOS – we explored different cultures’ similarities and differences, and promoted a philosophy of ‘unity in diversity’.
The objectives of the project were:
General objective: Empowerment of young migrants, refugees and asylum seekers
Specific objectives:
SO1. Capacity building of organisations working with the target group
SO2. Promoting participation in democratic life in Europe, active citizenship, intercultural dialogue, social inclusion and solidarity
SO3. Improving the level of key competencies and skills of young people through educational, cultural and artistic activities
The participating organisations were: FORME (Italy), Red Incola (Spain) and PRISMS (Malta). The project run 13 months, starting from 30 September 2018.
Thanks to the universal language of arts, indeed, we achieved our main goal that is to promote the empowerment of young migrants, refugees and asylum seekers in Europe.
More specifically, we dedicated the first stage of our action to the preparation and capacity building of organisation involved, in order to facilitate and improve their work with the target group.
Therefore, in order to promote participation in democratic life in Europe, and the main European values, such as active citizenship, intercultural dialogue, social inclusion and solidarity, our intention was to involve the local youth, who participated in activities with young refugees, and who supported us in spreading the word and operating a positive shift in the public opinion; tackling discrimination and xenophobia.
Lastly, young people had the chance, during the workshops, to improve and develop key competencies and skills at both personal and professional level, and broadened their knowledge about educational and professional opportunities offered by the EU programmes.
Participants came from different social and cultural backgrounds; more specifically:
– 6 youth workers (2/country);
– 36 young people (12/country; involving local youth and young people with migratory background – first and second generation)
Activities were implemented at different stages:
– Short term joint staff training;
– Local activities with young people and local trainings for youth workers;
– Blended mobility of young people.
The project was carried out through non-formal educational methods, both for the seminar, for the local activities and for the blended mobility.
Generally, the project impact resulted in the empowerment both of youth workers and young people participating, as well as in a positive shift in the whole community around them.
Organisations and youth workers had the opportunity to exchange best practices, and to learn new educational methods, as well as to improve their skills in EU project management. Moreover, transversal skills, such as interculturality, were improved, expanding, at the same time, their network of relations – professional and personal – in the view of future projects.
Young people developed key competences to be employed throughout their professional path, and interiorized the most important European values, such as open-mindedness, respect for diversity, tolerance, solidarity, active citizenship.
Local communities increased their awareness about migration issues, which will lead to a better understanding of the ongoing phenomenon, and a more critical viewpoint on migration policies.
