Project Summary

“ArchaeoSchool for the Future: a sustainability approach” uses the existence of archaeological sites from the Greco-Roman era in three closely associated areas of Europe as a basis for developing a strategic approach to strengthening the links between the school and its local environment, deepening concepts of local and European identity and improving the employment opportunities of young people.
Its key areas of interest are the integration of career awareness into curricula, strengthening pupil skills and competences to become active European citizens and the professional development of teachers. The archaeological sites targeted in the project are:
– Ancient Messini (Greece),
– Roman theatre in Verona (Italy)
– Roman ruins of Tàrraco, Tarragona (Spain)
– Ancient Greek and Roman cities of Empúries (Spain)

PARTNERS
Ten partners including educational and cultural organizations as well as schools collaborated in a range of activities which developed new content and knowledge to support the sustainability of the archaeological sites and their contribution to the economic life of their regions. Innovative forms of collaboration between teachers and pupils which use online communication platforms strengthened the concept of the European teacher and helped to embed a European dimension in the daily practice of schools involved in the project.

The main objectives were to :
-Strengthen learners’ competences across a range of disciplines (humanities, culture, contemporary and classical language, sciences, technology and economy) by applying entrepreneurial solutions to concrete challenges inherent in developing such a project
-Develop skills relevant for the world of work (digital literacy, active citizenship, critical thinking, problem solving , etc.) under the umbrella of XXIst century skills through the implementation of KB theory and Virtual Cultural Heritage tools
-Identify sustainable employment possibilities and broaden the career guidance available to unemployed young people
-Develop partnerships between schools, historical sites and social/economic partners at local level in order to develop the knowledge of learners and promote links with the labor market
– Create sustainable methodologies for ensuring that the richness of the past contributes to the social, cultural and economic life of the future
-Raise learners’ awareness of the importance of archaeological sites as part of everyday life by giving citizens the opportunity not only visiting them but by examining the relevance of ancient activities in the contemporary world
-Develop concepts of active citizenship (national and European), sustainability and social coherence through engagement with the history of the sites, their place in the local environment and as markers and continuers of cultural identity.
-Increase attractiveness of local and European monuments for young people

Target groups
The project leaded to an active engagement by secondary school pupils and teachers with the cultural heritage (archaeological and linguistic) of the areas surrounding all six schools involved in the project; used new technologies for building new content; encouraged respect for diversity through the study of the languages and cultures of others; analyzed the evidence of the past and develop strategies to ensure sustainability in the future
The project involved mainstream and disadvantaged learners, teachers, school heads, career guidance teachers, local community leaders, unemployed youth and stakeholders in local communities.

Activities and planned results
The activities included:
– Study of the archaeological sites (cultural, scientific, humanistic, economic, environmental) in order to identify ways of supporting concepts of active citizenship and employability
– Development of 3D virtual reconstructions of monuments using a Virtual Cultural heritage tool and simulations (EdMondo)
– Creation of teaching scenarios that highlight how archaeological sites can be seen as an inspiration for sustainable development in contemporary societies
– Development of a Knowledge community based on Knowledge Building theory via a specific online platform (Kf5)
– Increasing language competence and strengthening cultural awareness
– developing teacher seminars to reinforce the sense of a European space for teaching
– Virtual enterprise and entrepreneurship activities
– Dissemination activities and impact strategies
