Project Summary

In our project “Europe in transit” students from Bulgaria, Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic dealt with the subjects of mobility and change with respect to responsibility and sustainability in different areas. The cooperation between students from different European nations enabled intercultural learning, an awareness of transit situations – in the sense of a continual change – and fostered mutual respect for what the participating countries have already achieved in the field of a sustainable mobility. A particular focus was put upon the chances for young people in the international job market. Our project was structured by the following modular units:

Project modules and main activities:

A: Technology and economy in transit:
Visits of a variety of industrial companies and technological museums; documentation of the the visitis and talks with the people who work there:
Industrial companies: Postal centre in Ostrava,Kranamax near Vratsa (ship building), Ford company in Cologne, Marlenka (producer of cake; logistics), Hella (production of car lights); ride on the Wuppertal monorail
Museums: Industrial museum Ostrava, car museum Tatra, Polytechnical Museum Sofia
The students worked on presentations on the different means of transport and their ecological impact.

B: Nature in transit:
Ecological walk in the Arnsberg forest, train trip to a slate quarry in the Czech Republic, visit of the mountain area including a stalactite cave near Vratsa, walk in the mountain region St. Annaberg Poland, workshops on animals in the mountains, visit of the Wuppertal zoo and dealing with animals that are in danger of dying out.

C: Transitory states reflected in art:
Making of the film “Four countries in five days”, international poetry slam in Soest, art workshops in Soest and near Izbicko, presentation of artists from the four countries

D: Transit in society and in the humanities:
Making of posters on trade routes in all four countries, interviews with refugees in Germany, presentation on flight and expulsion visit of museum of deportation in Poland

Main results:
All areas were dealt with at the four participating schools. During each of the project meetings several modules were focused on, developed and clarified using examples from the host country. The work on the modular units led to an intense reflection on our responsibility for the future of our planet. Students also developed visions of the future in various areas.Project products included brochures, digital presentations, minutes, short dramatic scenes, contributions to a poetry slam and a central homepage, amongst others. The project was made public through major events hosted by the schools at which the public and local representatives took part, also through the local press as well as the individual schools’ homepages. The results of the project will form a part of the curricula of the participating schools and can, in turn, be used by other schools and institutions.

Main impacts:
The project was made public through events at the four school, at which local politicians and other representatives took part. There were several press articles as well as publications on the homepages and facebook site of the schools. Die project results will be part of the school curricula and can be used by other schools and institutions.
Another important long term result can be seen in the change in attitude on people, particulary young students, who have escaped from war and persecution in their countries and have arrived in a European country.
The participants of the project also gained a deeper insight into the world of work and had the opportunity to deal with their opportunities for their own future.
