Project Summary
– Context
Improving the global qualification and the specific competences of young graduates through high quality learning offers conditions the scientific and technological development of countries, with significant impact on their economical and societal status. In Poland knowledge on radiation technology and its various domains of application is still insufficient. There is a crucial need for highly qualified, experienced and motivated personnel ready to develop cutting edge research and training. Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology (INCT) educate Ph.D. students and researchers to contribute to the development and application of scientific knowledge at international level. However, enhancing qualification of research personnel is necessary to obtain the same quality of education present in other European countries in the some field of radiation processing. It was urgent for us to take initiatives in this domain with other international institutions to elaborate efficient training and teaching/learning program to enhance knowledge development and transfer between different institutions among students, staffs and researchers in the field of ionizing radiation for processing materials. The project “TL-IRMP” has filled up this gap. 7 partners from 5 EU countries and 1 associated state (Poland, France, Italy, Lithuania, Romania and Turkey) participated in this project.
– Objective
The objectives of this project were: (i) to enhance teaching education level in physics, chemistry and material science in higher education sector through intensive lectures delivered by world recognized scientists; (ii) to increase students competence in labor markets through the visits and training in industrial radiation facilities for material processing ; (iii) to strengthen international cooperation by this joint project ; (iv) to improve Universities/ research institution facilities for material processing to strengthen international cooperation by this joint project ; (v) to enhance the education and research level of Universities/ research institution in material sciences with favorable impact on their international reputation through cooperation and knowledge dissemination on the internet as well as through workshops and seminars.
– Results and impact
All in all, 18 professors, 10 senior scientists, 10 young staffs, 88 students, 10 technicians actively participated in this project . A total number of 150 mobilities were realized, including one student mobility without this project funds.
For the project implementation, following activities were supported and organized:
The course module “APPLICATIONS OF IONIZING RADIATION IN MATERIALS PROCESSING ” was developed and tested twice during intensive learning course sessions held in Italy, Poland, France and Lithuania. 13 world recognized Professors and scientists working in this research field have delivered lectures. The course covered topics starting from basic information ionization irradiation, EB and gamma sources, dosimetry, till state of art technologies. There were 90 hours of lectures and 12 hours of practice (lab works and visits to industrial irradiation facility) in each intensive learning programme. Practical demonstrations on radiation dosimetry and Instrumental techniques for product analysis in irradiated polymer materials were organized, as well as 6 hours practice at industrial irradiation facilities organized at INCT in the first intensive learning programme. 9 ECTS credits were awarded to the students who passed the written examination. Analysis results of the course module as intellectual output O3 were given in English, Italian, French, Lithuanian, Polish, Turkish and Romanian, respectively.
This project helped the students to obtain real-on site and practical knowledge through students’ visiting and training in industrial radiation facilities for material process, provided equal opportunity for different genders, and encouraged research and academic staffs to participate in the project. It provided students with up-to-date and specifically designed learning materials through lecture presentations and book chapters made available in digital form through a common internet portal.
One text book entitled “Application of ionizing radiation in materials process ” has been written and printed as intellectual output O2. Electronic version of the text book is available through the project website (http://tl-irmp.eu/en/). Three dissemination events were organized to disseminate the course module and text book.
The elaborated new course module and text book may be adopted in the future as regular teaching programme in the classroom and e-learning material, respectively. The knowledge gained during the project will help participants (mainly learners) to improve their impacts and influence of ionizing radiation on materials to develop new methods and techniques applied in producing materials with desired properties in the long term.
