Project Summary
The purpose of the project is to establish a connection between two schools with very different cultural background where students and teachers in the two countries work together. The partners are teachers and pupils of two different, volcanic islands: Iceland and Sicily. The lives of ordinary people on these islands has been based on agriculture and fishery for hundreds of years. Due to the geographical similarity with the sea so close, volcanic activity that threatened people and communities everything was dependent on nature. But different latitudes and historical background caused those two communities to evolve in a very different way. The work of the students will focus on life, nature and cultural aspects of people living on an active volcanic island where you can expect an eruption anytime. The aim is to deepen the understanding of the students in many fields of studies such as geology, geography, social studies, culture and languages. The idea is to compare and find out similarities and differences and to give the pupils opportunity to get to know each other, broaden their views and at the same time, to make their scientific competence stronger by a critical approach. At the same time the teachers hopefully establish a connection that will last for years. In all, the project involves four trips; first a preparatory visit of teachers from Italy to Iceland to prepare the project work of the students and their visits. Secondly the trip of the Icelandic students to Italy in spring 2015, thirdly the trip of the Italian class to Iceland in autumn 2015 and the last visit will be for evaluation in spring 2016 in Sicily. The outcome is awareness of the situations their fellow students face and at the same time gives a better understanding of their own lives.
Hopefully this is just the beginning of a long term relation between the schools taking part and the participants. In the future we hope to establish a further cooperation with individual long term mobility of students and teachers.
