Project Summary
The tasks of schools have radically changed in the 21st century. The educational institutions are not only expected to teach enormous knowledge but they are, under these altered circumstances supposed to assist in the up to date upbringing of students. Families very often fail to provide real support to young people; they fail to find real answers to their problems. As a matter of fact, schools are challenged to give a professional solution and response to the problems of young people. We are fully aware of this deficiency phenomenon.
Within the framework of this project we are going to look for common solutions to European problems of this kind by means of united international efforts.
Hungary, as a coordinator has already launched an initiative of this kind through the integration of similar contents into the syllabus, that is why Hungary led the project, and hoped to gain international experience. We invented a new „school subject” where our students can take time to deal with issues like national tradition and globalisation, social responsibility, problems out of manipulation by and addiction of media, generation gap and unemployment of the young. This new “subject” was included into the afternoon classes or even into the particular syllabus of the participating schools. During these classes students also learn communication and problem solving strategies. The objectives of this project also included the precise elaboration of the curriculum for these and similar topics which, by means of ranking the issues, didactics and a collection of tasks can be put into use in the course of education.
For the implementation of our project we consciously selected our partners. The four countries we chose (Bulgaria, Germany, Italy and Portugal) have been familiar with these problems, although they all had different experience. As the first step we informed each other about how exactly the given school had already been practising to solve youth problems. Based on this experience we found out about the foci of each country. This way the participants were in a position to enrich the whole project with their own experience and competence. All the partners are EU-countries, however, with differences in their historic background. Bulgaria, as a former socialist country went through similar development like Hungary. That is why the experience of this county was important for us. The traditional and modern way of life face each other, so they were given the awareness of tradition as their main focus. Germany also added to the partners. There, in the founder state of the EU the democracy gained ground much earlier than in the eastern countries. Civil rights and children’s rights had been playing a completely different role. Therefore, the comparison of today’s youth and their problems was significant. The education of democracy is of great importance in Germany. This is how we got to know the institution of “class council,” which forms the contents of the short-time mobility for students through the settlements of debates. The two other partners, Italy and Portugal have different educational systems, and they also showed considerable differences in view of their mind-set considering the development of the young. The Italian school proved to possess high-tech, where the students were well ahead in terms of the use of IT-tools. That is why they managed to contribute to the issue of safe use of the Internet in the course of the second student’s training very well. Through the cooperation with Portugal we got to learn about the unemployment of young professionals and the problems deriving from addictions in detail, and we were provided a wide spectrum to investigate into.
During the two years we had been permanently working on the issues we were assigned to, both with the teachers and students, thus the educational materials could be completed.
The qualification of teachers and students, both in conflict solving und communication skills served as a basis of the successful implementation of the project. These kinds of skills proved to be very important to have the required experts and sensible students in each schools so that they can participate both in the realization of new classes at school, and in the field of trainings of debate solving strategies in the future.
