Project Summary

The partnership project entitled ” Un jardin sans frontières. Que notre esprit fleurisse dans le jardine de l’Europe “, involved Italian, Rumanian, Portuguese, Spanish and Bulgarian schools. It was aimed at teachers and pupils in secondary schools (pupils aged 11 to 14 years.)
This project was born from the need to address the problems related to young people critical issue: lack of motivation, education , and many other difficulties students have to face in order to acquire basic skills.
In view of the above, the priority objectives of the partnership schools and of this project were to :
– Broaden the skills of teaching staff and to improve the quality of teaching
– Introduce new methods and teaching tools in practical teaching, with particular reference to active learning , constructive pedagogy
– Introduce a European dimension in education
All this in order to provide innovative tools for retrieval of basic skills and to promote academic success .
The project aimed at achieving the above mentioned objectives in two steps: the first one entailed confrontation between teachers and effective methodology, while the second one evaluated the classes.
The school partnership project ” Un jardin sans frontiers ” included:
– Opportunities for discussion, study and training among teachers on learning experiences, active / active learning / constructivist pedagogy
– Discussion on effective methods
– Planning for the classroom, in individual institutions and between different institutions
– 5 international meetings that involved the mobility of teachers
– Exchange of classes for a period of 7 days
– direct observations of teaching practice in other countries involved in the project during the exchange period of the classes.
The chosen theme was the garden because it was supposed to be particularly appropriate as it offered :
– Great possibilities to build interdisciplinary paths and, consequently, it was particularly suitable for teaching skills
– It lent itself to teaching in real live situations
– It was suitable for the of ICT
– it allowed you to work directly on the recovery of basic skills
Students dealt with the theme of the garden through the interdisciplinary study of the subject in various disciplines:
-History – the garden in Antiquity , the Middle Ages, the Renaissance , etc. .
-Art – art history (from Roman paintings to land – art , creating fantastic gardens ( with two-dimensional and three-dimensional techniques ), study of perspective applied to gardens)
– Science and geography – and phytogeography of the school vegetable garden
– Language and Literature – Reading and analysis of texts from children’s literature on the subject, creative writing
– Technology , mathematics, active citizenship – designing a garden for the city, the school’s vegetable garden
– Music – garden in music
– All disciplines used ICT .
The achieved results were twofold:
– Tangible : reports on the project , implementation of events, production of teaching materials , production of virtual scrapbook of gardens, herbaria virtual models of plants and gardens, drawings, sculptures , stories, diaries. The project documentation and materials have been published on a website dedicated to the project.
– Non-tangible : the construction of a common experience in the field of European landscape heritage , the introduction of a European dimension to education, the improvement of basic skills (pupils ) , improving digital skills ( students and teachers ) and teachers’ professional development.
In the long term, hopefully, it will introduce a European dimension and spread issues related to European citizenship to different educational institutions of the countries involved.
