Project Summary
The aim of the TRACE project was to introduce to target group, teachers and librarians who works with children from age 6 to age 12, as well as wider audience from all the EU countries, with traditional children’s stories from partners’ countries. Indirectly target group were children from 6 to 12. Through this aim children, teachers, educators and librarians learned more about EU countries and their culture in an innovative way. Children were motivated and habituated to critical thinking, to read and understand literature/writings from their early age.
A Survey for Teachers and Librarians about Traditional Children Stories with Ethical Issues was launched by all partners in each country and was conducted amongst teachers, educators, librarians and experts (173 answers) as well as the Focus group (44 participants). Based on these activities, The Review of the current State of Art was made which gave us basic information what teachers and librarians need, what is there knowledge about traditional stories from EU Countries and also a research about practices and examples that exist. Each partner had to select three traditional children stories based on native tale tradition and culture. In total, 21 stories were proposed for selection. Partners selected 12 stories (3 from each country) in line with the project application. Foremost selected stories were translated into English so that they could be translated into partners national languages. Each partner had to translate three stories from their country to English. After that, partners had to translate 9 (nine) stories from other partner countries to their native language. Since multiple stories were selected and proposed, partners decided to translate them all to their native languages, so in total 21 stories were translated into several languages and innovative workshops were created for all of the chosen stories.
TRACE project was realized by applying the horizontal EU theme Social and educational value of European cultural heritage. Through the project we are contibuting in raising awareness of the importance of Europe’s cultural heritage through education and life-long learning, supporting skills development, social inclusion and critical thinking. New participatory and intercultural approaches to heritage, as well as educational initiatives aimed at fostering intercultural dialogue involving teachers and pupils from an early age.
The main objective of the project is connected with other horizontal EU theme Open and innovative practices in a digital era through new and innovative educational methods, developing learning materials and tools as well as actions that support the effective use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in education and training.
The aims of the TRACE project are based on a European reference framework of key competences for lifelong learning. Communicating in the mother tongue promotes the reading culture and enhances the skill of communicating in the mother tongue. Translating the stories encourages communication and learning foreign languages. Digital competences will be used through the TRACE E-platform. Social and civic competences help participate in an effective and constructive way in social and working life in today’s diverse society. The new way of life forces us to give them a new kind of education that consists of researching, thinking, and making conclusions, with the goal of creating one’s own thinking and ideas, developing an understanding of oneself and the society we live in and finding one’s life orientation and ethical values. The key competence Cultural awareness and expression teaches them to value and nurture their own culture, helps them learn about different cultures and, through methods of philosophy for children, helps them find some answers and knowledge about the world we live in, as well as knowledge of ourselves.
In this project proposal, a new element is added to the strategic partnership since this project established “TRACE E-Platform for traditional European children stories” (IO2). This E- platform is planned to be the beginning of the portal of traditional children stories for EU countries.
The TRACE project outputs are: stories translated to five EU languages, learning materials, workshops and promotional materials (e.g., roll up, leaflets, and a web site). The result includes introducing children from their early age to the culture and tradition of other European countries and developing their critical thinking, which is an important precondition for realizing the planned unity of EU countries, which has its foundation in the very idea of the European Union. In the TRACE project, new ways of getting to know neighboring and non-neighboring countries are developed from an early age. At the same time, European teachers are introduced to children’s literature of European countries they are not that familiar with, which will enrich their future work.
