Project Summary
Cultural Heritage: Industry, history and future.
In 1868 Charles Theodoor Stork founded the metal factory Gebr. Stork & Co (machinery, boilers, etc.) in Hengelo. The foundation was the beginning of the metal industry in Hengelo and this year we are celebrating that 150 years ago the industrialization of Hengelo began.
We investigate the history of our city. Why did it originate there? What are, or were, the factors that contributed to the development and growth of the city.
What were the consequences of industrialisation?
Population, increase (birth, migration, etc.)
Architecture (factory buildings, schools, residential areas, etc.)
The oldest industrial buildings in Hengelo are about 130 years old. What can one do with the buildings or the premises, if the former factories have disappeared/moved? In Hengelo a new school was built in an old hall. There are several examples in Europe (e. g. Zeche Zollverein in Essen).
What new uses are there for the old buildings, what is possible or do we demolish everything? How do communities deal with the industrial past?
If we have new ideas, how can we realize them? What happens if we build a school in an old factory building? (In Hengelo, this leads to more cars and traffic in a housing estate and thus to parking problems, among other things). So what must happen to the infrastructure?
How can we renovate or redesign the old areas (five years ago I had a master class and they had the assignment to make sure that more people leaving the car in a fairly new industrial area)?
How can we ensure that an (old) industrial city becomes attractive for its own inhabitants and tourists (example is the Ruhr area).
And what about the sustainability of the new old buildings and premises. Is everything ready for the future?
