Project Summary
Taking into consideration that both – The European Commission and Ministry of Science and Education of Lithuania are encouraging to give more attention to teaching exact sciences, our project was aimed at application, integration and practical use of various fields of knowledge.
In school education more importance is usually put onto natural sciences and maths while engineering and technologies are considered to be of less importance. For this reason the aim of this project was to popularize STEAM subjects and boost the interest in them. The aim of the project was the promotion of international cultural communication between different educational institutions, presentation of possibilities for improving skills of learning English, getting acquainted with the newest technologies and using them in creating engineering devices, raising pupils‘ interest in STEAM subjects and developing their creativity, initiative and business skills in shaping European culture of innovations.
The project was carried out in several different directions – development of social and cultural consciousness, communication, research activities, engineering work, problem solving and flexibility. Schools from Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Netherlands, Portugal and Turkey, which participated in the project, were actively working in the STEAM field. The target group – 9 – 18 year old pupils. The project was oriented to the co-operation and exchange of innovation and good practice among educational institutions of different countries. The aim was not only to raise interest in STEAM subjects and boost their popularity but also improve pupils results in this field.
The project offered possibilities not only to search for causes and effects, observe, make experiments with water but also to create, make a new device which helped to take water samples from lakes and rivers from different depths. When making this device pupils improved their knowledge, creativity and team work skills. Pupils tried to formulate a hypothesis, aims and objectives, learnt to plan and make experiments, observed them, analyzed the results and made conclusions. The mobile application about water basins was created for the use of partner countries as well as people interested in this field was created. Because of the possibility to continue the cooperation, it was decided to go further with this tool and improve it with more details and information.
The target topics of the project were: quality of potable water, water basins, water in art and literature. Research activities, scientific experiments, tests, creativity workshops and days of researchers were carried out and organized. The project presented possibilities for the pupils to explore the world and make experiments, conducted their first scientific experiment when still at school. In carrying out the project the cooperation with the partners from different countries, encouraging innovative STEAM initiatives among them was done. The partner countries shared practical experience, especially in making the device. With the help of ICT we communicated and shared the results of tests, experiments with water and water basins. We looked for differences and similarities, published new ideas and inevitably got to know other European countries and cultures closer. The dissemination of the information was useful to other schools as well and they were be able to learn how to integrate creatively STEAM subjects into the education process. It was planned that young people of different backgrounds, nationalities and schools would explore a never ending topic of ecological water and develop competencies of STEAM subjects at the same time.
