Project Summary

The ADN project has involved over 1100 young people, most of them young people with fewer opportunities. This was a project taken part in 3 continents (Turkey , Portugal , Cape Verde and Italy) with the aim of creating the first World Network of Youth Friendly Cities. At the same time we were able to reduce school-leaving and youth unemployment, particularly amongst young people from minorities, with disablilities or from the most disadvantaged backgrounds through a participatory learning process.
Each young person redesigned his or her life plan based on realistic life-goals set by them. On the other hand, we worked against the phenomena of child labor and promoted the dynamics of participatory democracy as a means of promoting youth participation among young people at risk through the creation of informal youth groups and youth associations.
For this we carried out a non- formal education process which was based on commitment to a more inclusive growth through the Youth Friendly City (YFC) Network , composed of IDEAS spaces. This structure created a support structure for young people to combat poverty and marginalization.
The basic metodologie of each IDEAS Space was the method of Clans. To every young integrated in an IDEAS Space was assigned a Master (an animator or more experienced youth worker ) and the title of young Apprentice . The IDEAS spaces that every youngster integrated was his/her Clan, and like it happens in every Clan , the apprentice has evolved by degrees , until reaching the status of Master. When it was possible, he took the place of the Master and he also accepted new apprentices as they had done with him initially. After Apprentice, when the youngster saw that he/she was prepared to ascend he/she asked his Master and Clan. They had 3 levels of status: Apprentice, Master Apprentice and finally the status of Master, with the responsibility of directing their own apprentices and building a new group.
We finished with a network of eight spaces. The IDEAS Spaces had a dual function . They were Youth Resource Centres for the Promotion of Social Entrepreneurship and provided the birth of informal youth groups or youth organizations . On the other side they were Ludical Laboratories of new methodologies for inclusive non-formal education, where young people involved key stakeholders , supported by the youth workers of the project .
We had a strong work of international cooperation through ADN/DNA Summits that promoted the exchange of good practices and articulation of action plans of all partners. This work was complemented by international advertising campaigns and dissemination activities in all countries with initiatives that reaced towsands of young people. In the end of the project we had as main results the DNA web platform, new pedagogical book and new youth associations and informal groups that became a reality and that will carry on DNA project.
