Project Summary
Rise and Rise Strong Female – development, inclusion and improvement the quality of life of women was a strategic partnership of 6 organizations all active in the field of non-formal learning, adult education and lifelong learning from the UK, Italy, Turkey, Russia, Cyprus and Romania.
The project aimed to develop basic and civic competencies through an intergenerational exchange between female senior volunteers, adult trainers and young women categorised as NEET and/or from a migrant background. We considered that each group of women had certain competencies, which could be shared with other women. On the one hand, young unemployed women were not fully aware of their fundamental rights or competencies and there was oftentimes a lack of autonomy among these women. However, these women have grown up with ICT and therefore have easy access and related skills. On the other hand, female volunteer trainers who did not have the necessary competencies could share their life experiences as active citizens and transfer some of their non-formal pedagogic tools.
In order to close this gap, we wanted to cooperate at a European level with trainers in adult education, senior volunteers and their learners to exchange good practices. The intergenerational learning setting helped young unemployed women to value their competences, develop basic skills, knowledge about active citizenship and rights with the support of senior women using autobiographical methods. The young women helped senior women to get better access to modern technologies.
The idea for the project was based on the results of a successfully completed Grundtvig project. Within this project “Ambassadors of active citizenship”, the so-called “Giovanna’s” were formed on the autobiographical method. These senior women, all actively engaged in civil society and local NGOs discovered and learned to use different tools in order to help other women to value their informal competencies.
Our main objectives were:
– To increase the value in the civic competencies of young women categorised as migrants or NEET
– To increase awareness of the fundamental rights, means of social prevention and active citizenship among young women
– To exchange best practices between trainers in non-formal education for adults (autobiographical method, valorization of basic competencies)
– To reduce intergenerational and gender gaps in ICT competencies
– To increase awareness of the importance of digital inclusion
Our target groups were:
– European young unemployed women categorised as migrants or NEET
– European adult trainers in non-formal education, senior women involved in local NGOs
The problem of low basic and civic competencies among adults was not just national but certainly a European problem. The idea was to exchange the best practices in non-formal education and to use the best and improved methods on a national level in each country involved.
Three transnational meetings between project coordinators and trainers were carried out in order to identify and share good practices on intergenerational learning and non-formal methods, especially ICT. After each meeting, training courses at a national level were organised in order to stimulate intergenerational learning and to test and develop the shared learning tools.
The project benefited women regardless of age, social or cultural background. Trainers and volunteers gained expert knowledge in non-formal learning and improved abilities through the exchange of best practices.
With this strategic partnership, we wanted to enable non-formal trainers to work together, exchange their learning approaches, enabling women to meet and learn beyond national borders by working together at a European level.
