Project Summary

Education is an open space which provides beneficiaries a wide range of opportunities to develop lifelong competences and personal values. For this reason, we have built a partnership consisting of 5 European schools which, through specific competences and actions, can contribute to the project and address it at an international level. Consequently, our joint experience and expertise certify the required skills and abilities towards making EWASTE a successful strategic partnership.
The pillars for international cooperation have already been set; we initiated a project on the e-twinning portal which we expect to further develop into a strategic partnership that will give concreteness and sustainability to our initiative.
The idea for the project aroused following a needs analysis carried out in all partner schools- to address a 21st century challenge in terms of healthy environment for quality life. We discovered that all partner organisations share common interests and the ambition to enhance students’ sense of responsibility for their future from a global perspective.
As a result, tackling the e-waste issue increased our secondary school students’ awareness on the types of e-waste, fares of e-waste, dangers, recycling.
According to the Global E-waste Observation Report, the most efficient way to solve the e-waste problem rapidly increasing initially in America and in many countries in Europe is to educate consumers about the dangers of e-waste and increasing the awareness on the appropriate elimination of them. Less waste and correct waste management were indicated as objectives in these reports essential for a liveable environment. Reaching these objectives through education was clearly stated. On the one hand, the Global E-waste Report and the national reports of the countries indicate the importance of the studies to be done. On the other hand, this issue is not studied in environmental education or technology course books or other subject books. By including these issues and raising awareness on e-waste in schools, our project is an innovative initiative.
Within the partnership, we achieved the following objectives:
-stimulated participants to act as global multipliers in the education field in their own organisation, at regional and European level
-developed a pro-active attitude of participants towards global issues
-enhanced active participation and citizenship
-provided opportunities for students to develop creativity
The objectives were achieved through a number of national and international activities for which participants worked in transnational teams.
Project activities included: project logo competition, e-waste collection campaign, posters workshops, organizing scenario, story and short film competitions, project exhibitions, trekking, presentation on various topics, website design.
The activities were integrated in the curriculum and rely on both formal and non-formal methods. Besides, the transnational meetings were highlights in our project, providing a learning process environment based on participants’ experience and exchange using different methods that focus mainly on practice, which generated strengthened motivation, team spirit, self-confidence, creativity for constructive activities and further lifelong skills.
Promoting intercultural dialogue, referring to international standards in education, variety and specificity of educational systems in partner countries became a source of development and mutual stimulation to facilitate an open space for European cooperation in the field of education. Schools benefited through the introduction and strengthening of the European dimension in the curriculum, new teaching systems, development of interdisciplinary approaches. Moreover, participants in the project transfered their knowledge and skills to their own families, communities.
Learning results are represented by knowledge, competences, attitudes, emotions.
Project outcomes are:
– This booklet: on the harmful effects and the management, economic aspects of e-waste and our project activities,
– presentations introducing each school and country,
– project website: www.erasmusewaste.com
– unique project logo designed and created by the students,
– posters and brochures,
– stories,
– a short film used as a public commercial ad,
– online group presentations and dynamic meetings.
On a long term, the partnership is expected to enhance students’ sense of successful European citizenship through environmental sustainable conservation activities carried out in an international setting.
