Project Summary

• Context/background of project
“One Earth – One Chance” is the continuation of the good cooperation between the two schools in Austria and Norway. The project wants to bring forward young people’s engagement for the environment and their focus on sustainability, which can be seen through the participation in the “Global climate strike”-movement. This emerges with the emphasizes on sustainability as an interdisciplinary theme in the new Norwegian curriculum.

Another background for the project is the awareness of competence in a foreign language as a tool for the students cultural understanding, communication, general sense of decorum and the formation of identity. The ability to speak with different people from around Europe and the rest of the world will increase intercultural understanding and prevent ethnocentrism.

• Objectives for the project:
– Describe different aspects of sustainability and how they influence each other and present actions for a more sustainable society.
– Investigate the possibilities for training, health and well-being through different kinds of physical activities and to prepare sustainable food which give grounds for good health.
– Discuss how energy production and the use of energy can affect local and global environment and how this knowledge can contribute to a more sustainable use of nature.
– Improve student´s oral and written competence in English.

• Number and profile of participants
– 3 teachers and 31 students from each school will participate in the exchange
– The pupils will be between 13 and 16 years old.

• Description of activities
– Students do exercises to get to know each other.
– Different activities about sustainability will be done at both schools before, between and after the exchanges. Students cooperate, share and discuss on eTwinning.
– Exchange in Austria with focus on different aspects of climate and sustainability. Students will visit a glacier to look at how it is retreating and the influence on the local area. They will also take a closer look at the garbage situation and transport situation in Altmünster and Gmunden. In addition, the whole school will have a cultural day which focuses on sustainability, have workshops which deal with sustainability and an activity day dedicated to sustainable tourism.
– Exchange in Norway where the main focus is energy resources and energy production. Students will visit the Norwegian Energy Centre and Hunderfossen power station as well as a small local waterpower station. There will also be an international day and a sustainable activity day for the whole school. Finally, there will be workshops making multimodal texts about the theme.

• Methodology to be used in carrying out the project
– Establish a TwinSpace on eTwinning.
– Activities where students get to know each other through letters, identity collages etc which they share on eTwinning.
– Doing in-depth exercises about different aspect of sustainability where students from both countries contribute, cooperate, share and discuss at the schools and on eTwinning.

• A short description of the results and impact envisaged
– Students can use different perspectives, including local, national and global, to describe the different aspects of sustainability.
– Students can manage to find sustainable solutions to real problems considering health, climate, nature, environment and technology.
– Students become more conscious of their own actions and be able to review them in a global context.
– Students can express themselves, both written and orally, so they can bring forward their knowledge and reflections in a way that suits the purpose, recipient and communication situation.

• Potential longer term benefits.
– Both the schools and the students will increase the focus on and awareness of sustainability, locally, nationally and globally.
– The awareness of sustainability may lead to a change for the two schools and the students in their own consumption and behaviour and make all parts act more sustainable.
– Increased foreign language competence which will help students in their future education in upper secondary school and help them pass exams etc.
– Develop students intercultural understanding and broaden their horizon so they can accept differences in both people and cultures and prevent ethnocentrism.
