Project Summary

The Ludwig-zu-Sayn-Wittgenstein School in Bad Berleburg is a lower-education secondary school currently attended by 298 students.
Our school has been a certified Nature Park School since July 10, 2018, which means that it meets the nationwide standards defined by the Association of German Nature Parks (Verband der Deutschen Naturparke e.V. (VDN)), and cooperates closely with Sauerland Rothaargebirge Nature Park, within the territory of which it is located. The object of this cooperation is to enhance the school’s curriculum, putting greater emphasis on the region’s nature, identity and cultural heritage.

Sauerland Rothaargebirge Nature Park has maintained a strategic partnership with the Vikos Aoos Geopark in Greece since 2018. The latter is a Geopark recognized by the UNESCO.
It was through this cooperation that we became aware of the opportunity to strive for a teacher and student exchange via Erasmus+. Approx. 12 students from grades 8 to 10 from Bad Berleburg, two to three teachers and one employee from Sauerland Rothaargebirge Nature Park will take part in the envisaged project. The idea of the exchange is to increase the students’ awareness of environmental and nature conservation, biodiversity, geodiversity, nature and species protection and environmental protection. Seeing the bigger picture by looking into other European countries and regions opens up a new perspective. Nature conservation can only succeed if we understand the actions of other conservationists. Nature and environmental protection or environmental education thrives on a shared exchange of experience!

The nature park school work is coordinated by a team that sees itself not as static but as dynamic. “Nature Park School” has been a school development project since 2018 and has therefore been in process for years. The student exchange with Greece and Erasmus+ should make up an essential part of the project.

The cooperation relates to specific activities in environmental education and nature conservation. The students have been working actively in nature conservation in nature reserves for years and carried out exceptional projects on the subject of animals and plants as well as their conservation and landscape management. The motto is: Learn internationally with and from each other! Nature needs strong partners!
