Project Summary

No matter how developed a country is, gender inequality is witnessed in each and every aspect of life all around the world. Even if gender cannot be the core of success, intelligence and potential , in many countries, it can be a key determinant of who does what, who decides, who has power, who earns more and even who gets an education or not. Likewise, according to experts, even small actions shaping children’s behaviors, conceptions and perception can redefine their future actions and thoughts.

According to Global Gender Gap Report 2020, not only our ancestors but we haven’t also been able to see gender parity in our lifetimes. Moreover, our children will not be able to experience gender equality in their life span. As it is stated in the report, gender equality will not be sustained for 99.5 years, but the main weapon to achieve it is EDUCATION. According to the report, the gender gap is seen on all levels of life, from parliamentary representation, (women have secured only 25% of available positions) to leading positions (85 states have never had female presidents). On an economic level gender gap is high as globally, only 55% of women (aged 15-64) are engaged in the labour market as opposed to 78% of men. There is no country where men spend the same amount of time on unpaid work as women.

In the light of these results one of the most common problems all around the world is about facing gender ineqality in each aspect of lives which affect economics, politics, education and health. Therefore we have decided to conduct this project to englight children, to raise awareness towars mostly encountered issue in the world. To achieve so, we have decided on some critical objectives as follows ; changing students’ attitudes and behaviours towards misunderstood gender stereotypes, raising students’ awareness towards gender (in)equality through a series of interdisciplinary activities integrated into the normal flow of lessons, improving the students’ critical thinking, analyzing skills by doing debates based on gender roles, increasing general sensitivity, understanding and knowledge about gender (in)equality and developing interdisciplinary collaboration between all the subjects involved in teaching, such as English, each partner country’s mother tongue, literature, arts. We tried to involve innovative teaching methodologies such as: gamification, peer learning, TPR, learning by doing, project based learning as well as learning in nonformal environments.

Our project “Diversity, Unity, Equality” consists of a partnership between six countries (Greece, Spain, Poland, Portugal, Turkey and Croatia) and includes six short term exchange of students. The project was build on an eTwinning called “We Are An Equality team” project which was implememnted by the partners, and it was aimed to offer an introduction to the topic. ETwinning platform will also be used for the preparation, implementation and follow- up of our Erasmus+ project, including virtual exchanges on twinspace as well.

As this project is held by countries from different parts of Eurpoe which differ in cultural background, economy, ethnicty and religion 650 students within 11-14 ages are included as participants. The students’ parents and many institutions who fight for the same aim (gender equality) will also be involved through planned workshops and field trips.

By implementing this project, the teachers (directly and indirectly involved) will gain knowledge on how to teach Gender Equality to young learners and how to include this topic in the curriculum of as many schools as possible. Moreover, this expected result will be reinforced and supported by the “Handbook for Teaching Gender Equality” which will be distributed to as many teachers as possible through different channels: in print and ebooks.

The most important achievement of this project in long term will be the change of the students mindsets regarding the opposite gender, and the fight against gender inequalities caused by gender stereotypes. In long term, we expect to have more knowleadgeable teachers to work on this topic, and future generations of students who will not experience the negative effects of gender gap.

Main benefit both for students and teachers – that they are given the opportunity to develop a common European identity and realize through joint activities and mobilities that they are not just citizens within specigic geographic borders, they are European citizens, as well. Through our participation in meaningful activities, we realise all our similarities and differences with our partners and become aware of the necessity to participate in Erasmus projects in order not just to accept the “other” or “different” but to adopt it.
